One click full site backup. JoomlaPack backs up your site files and your site database in one go. It can even backup non-Joomla! scripts and their MySQL databases along with your Joomla! site, without any compromise! It will even include a restoration script inside the archive (derived from the standard Joomla! installer) to make restoring your site a piece of cake.

Basically it creates a .zip that you can use to install your site again on any server…. kind of like your own quickstart.

they made the new version quite complicated in my opinion

heres what i do, i have two ways of doing it

Method 1) I save my site using JP as a zip file, this backs up everything

download it and then upload the zip to the new site using an ftp program,(cpanel file manager probably will have a file size limitation)

then i go to file manager and unzip the file

from the orignal site i export the db using PHPmyadmin
then on the new site i create a new empty db, then using PHPmyadmin i import the old db to the new

then i rename the installation folder ( do not delete)
then in the configuration.php i manuall change the db to the new one and the live url as well as the db name and password

    Method 2)
I save my site using JP as a zip file, this backs up everything

download it and then upload the zip to the new site using an ftp program,(cpanel file manager probably will have a file size limitation)

then i go to cpanel/file manager and unzip the file

i create a new empty DB
then i go to the site URL and run the JP install, it will load the old db into the new site, and you are good to go, just follow directions

I use JP as well with kickstart — It was very easy but I have not updated for awhile looking at the latest version it seems kickstart does not work with it ;(

I use similar to MJ’s Method 2 but I use the .jpa format (much quicker to backup and smaller file size.) And I use kickstart to restore – again, much quicker and it’ll do things like restore your .htaccess file too.

bookpeg;136860HWill this also install joomla along with it.. [/quote] Yes. Upload the kickstart.php file along side your .jpa file and point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/kickstart.php and follow the onscreen instructions.

Kickstart will uninstall the files to whatever location you have placed it and the .jpa file( your backup) to.

If you want your Joomla site to be located at http://www.mydomain.com then yes… extract it to your publichtml folder. If you want your joomla site located at http://www.mydomain.com/example then create a folder (directory) called ‘example’ inside your publichtml folder and extract it there instead.

    Nah it’s not complicated Bookpeg.

Once you have JP installed on your development site open it up and make a backup. That backup will be a .zip file (by default) and is the very same as a quickstart you get here. It contains all your content and Joomla. You can install it to your new location the very same way you would install a quickstart.

That’s all there is to it.

An alternative way to do it is to upload the whole .zip to your new location and also upload the kickstart.php file to the new location. With your browser go to http://www.yournewlocation.com/kickstart.php and follow the instructions on screen.

You don’t have to use the kickstart method but it’s faster.

K sounds easier give it a go.. issues with uploading to the ftp at the moment, so may put it off..

bookpeg;137085issues with uploading to the ftp at the moment

Yea you see this is why using kickstart is better.

If you extract the zip and upload the files using FTP it is very slow. Because of the way FTP works a connection has to be opened for each individual file (over 4000 in Joomla) then the info for each file has to be read by the FTP client and so on. Slow even on a fast connection. 50Mb over 4000 files takes about 15 times longer to upload via FTP than a single 50Mb file.

If you use kickstart you just upload two files. The .zip and the kickstart.php itself. Then you use the kickstart to unzip the .zip on the server.

You can also use your cPanel file manager to unzip the .zip but it has limitations. It will not overwrite files and it will not enable your .htaccess file. It will also not report any specific errors but kickstart will.

It really is worth the time it takes to learn to use JP properly. If you work with Joomla a lot it can save you endless hours. There is a good reason it was voted the 2nd best extension of all time!
