I’m not exactly sure how to customize the login module. I would like to create a page where new users can create login/username information. If they enter an incorrect name/password, I would like to redirect them to the registration page. Seems easy, but I don’t know where to start.

In your Joomla folder you will find modules/mod_login but I have no idea how to do what you want to do.

you can embed the login module into a content item

it s not designed to do that as it would cause confusion and usability issues. If they are already registered, why would you want to redirect them to the registration page
