I hope this doesn’t sound like a silly question:

How do I change which menu is dsplayed at the top? I know I did this before, but I can’t remember how or figure it out!

Also, I just started a French version of my site and I can’t figure out how to set up one of the menus as the top menu. http://www.dynamichcs.com/index.php/fr/
now there is a English menu item at the top called ‘Home’.

    Thanks,

    Meg

Hey Meg – WELCOME to the JA Community !!!

First of all … with few exceptions, virtually NO question is a “silly” question. While there are some issues which, sometimes, can usually be readily found via using the JA Forum “Search” function, such is not always the case and the bottom line is … if you knew the answer, you would not have asked the question. 😉

Here is a VERY EASY “explore-and-conquer” method to figure out which menu is being utilized for any given menu/navigation . . .

    1. Note the names of the navigation items in the menu you want to identify

    2. Go into your MENU MANAGER in your Joomla Administration backend and click through the various menu’s listed.

    3. When you find the menu with the same names/items as the one you’re trying to identify – THERE YOU HAVE IT !!!

By the way …. DO NOT feel silly if you think to yourself “I should have known that.” For some reason, the JA Development Team’s method for naming certain things can sometimes be a little confusing.PRIME EXAMPLE … Often times the navigation items within the FOOTER section of any given template are listed within the menu called “topmenu.” Now tell me, does that make a whole lot of practical naming sense? One would logically think that the navigation items within a footer section of a website would be listed within a menu called “footermenu” or something like that, don’tcha think? 😉

No offense intended whatsoever to the JA Dev Team …. just some constructive observation and comment.
    😎

    Anyway, hope that helps !!!

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I can identify the menus, but I can’t remember or figure out how to change which menu appears across the top. In other words, I can’t figure out waht to do to make a different menu appear across the top.

In my French version, I can’t figure out how to get any menu to appear acrodss the top. “Home” is there, but I can’t change it to a French word. http://www.dynamichcs.com/index.php/fr/

All you need to do is find the particular menu item within your Module Manager list (for example, “Top Menu,” or “Key Concepts,” “User Menu,” “Main Menu,” etc.). Open up that particular item and assign it to the position you want (i.e. top, right, left, footnav, etc.)

Yes, I understand that. I have 3 menus in position ‘left’. One of them is ALSO across the top, but I cannot figure out how it got that position. In the menu list, it has a star next to it. I figure this means it’s the ‘default’ menu, but HOW is it the default menu? How can I change which menu is displayed across the top?

You can do one of two things . . . you can either send me a PM with the login info to your Joomla administration and I will take a look, or you can submit a support ticket (which will ask for the same information).

If you choose to send me a PM, please also let me know which menu it is that you want to display across the top.

    Meg:

I apologize .. I did not understand completely what you were asking. NOW I understand . . .

You want your FRENCH language main nav menu – which you created – to be assigned to your site when a user selects the FRENCH language option. I personally have not used the Language Switcher component/module. Here is what I believe the pertinent information is with regard to the language switcher component . . .

Defining a Default Home page Menu item per language

As the Language Switcher Module is set to redirect to another Content Language Home Page, one Default Home page menu item has to be defined for each language in a different menu, displayed by a different menu module.

Important Note: A Menu containing a unique Default Home page menu item tagged to "All" should still exist, and the menu module displaying it should not be published or assigned to a position NOT available in the templates.

WARNING! Some templates available on the Net are not totally 1.6 compatible. They do not let create new styles and force to use a unique Default Home page.
Also, within the Language Switcher module, it says . .

    2. Create a Home page by assigning a language to a menu item and defining it as Default Home page for each published content language.

I have experimented with different combinations and configurations, and I cannot seem to get the french menu items to display when the FRENCH language site option is selected. :((

Therefore, I am going to try to assist in getting some additional help with the support ticket you already submitted – ROX-637-37849 . Hopefully, one of the Developers might take a look and be better able to assist with this issue. (I am very interested in the solution as well).

I am sorry that I was not able to solve this for you at my level. But keep the faith, I am quite certain that we – as a Community – will resolve this issue for you. OBVIOUSLY it can be done … I think there just might be a detail both you and I are missing.

For others who might want to offer some suggestions, here is Meg’s site –> http://www.dynamichcs.com

Now I see that you do understand!
I figure there must be a solution also. I had noted to you in my PM that I had read the sections you have referenced in the ‘code’ sections above, but that information is not totally clear to me. I have tried to interpret that as best as I could.
Hopefully at the end of this we can add to that info so that others have an easier time.

    Update:

the menu item ‘Acceuil” in the “Bienvenu a DHCS” menu is the default French menu item.
The menu item “Home” in the “Welsome to DHCS” menu is the default English menu item.
The unpublished menu item ‘Dummy Default Item” in Unpublished menu is the Default “All” menu item – as I was instructed to do in the above-mentioned tutorial.

So, why isn’t ‘Bienvenu a DHCS’ menu showing across the top of the French site, and if you click on the different menu items in the ‘Bienvenu a DHCS’ menu, different items appear across the top??

Thanks! Hopefully someone will have a suggestion or answer.

    Did you ever solve this?
I have the exact same problem…

If the top menu, Menu Type in the templates Menu Settings (megamenu), dont pick the menu module from a position.. then how can it switch language?

This really is a tricky one for me :S

Well, I have solved part of this:
This ‘simple’ part is that whichever menu has the ‘home’ page is the menu that appears across the top.

I have still not figured out how to get a French menu across the top. English menu items were appearing across the top, but then I gave my login info to a support person and now nothing appears across the top in the French site. That’s a bit better, but I’d really like my French menu to be there.

    Hello ezziemac,

    Hi,

I can’t find anything about this bug when I check the above link. This is not solved, and no one seems to be trying to figure it out. There is a bug. I have followed all instructions, and I cannot get a menu across the top in my French site.

    French site: http://www.dynamichcs.com/index.php/fr/
    English site: http://www.dynamichcs.com/index.php/en/:((

Solved? No. There is no menu across the top of the French site. There should be a menu across the top.

What about the bug report? I followed the link you gave me in a previous post: http://pm.joomlart.com/browse/JATCRAVE-132 but I don’t see any information there about my problem.

One of the developers just tried to help by telling how to change my logo. This has nothing to do with the logo. It is about the menu that appears across the top. Why does it seem that Joomlart does not understand what I am asking? They say there is a bug report, but I can’t find it.

    I have attached 2 images:
One shows the top of the English site with a menu.
The other shows the top of the French site withoput a menu.

I hope somebody can help me with this.

    Thank you.
