April 29, 2010 at 4:47 pm #150740I disabled the default Joomla Login/Registration module, in all my sites. Instead, I uploaded the Community Builder (CB) Login/Registration kit plus captcha to regulate (minimize) automated (bots/machine) registration requests.
The CB captcha should screen (prevent) most of the automated registration requests. However, I still get too many registrations to what appear as bots or automated registration requests. This indicated that the captcha screening is not working fully.
To check whether the aforementioned issue could be corrected: I disabled the CB Login/Registration module. It still did prevent automated registration requests.
How do you block registration? What script or may be enabled disabled or enabled to regulate the registration?
Is there a better Joomla application module that could block or more effectively minimize automated registration requests?Note: The CB has a feature that allows administrator screening of registration, to avoid automated registrations. Still this is not the same as blocking or minimizing registration requests.

[Note: This issue is encountered in any Joomla site created. The steps taken to disable the modules indicated above simply requires “disabling” the module in the administrator. No actual file scripts or directories were modified or removed.]

April 30, 2010 at 3:05 am #342129I’d forget worrying about modules.
In the /administrator area:
Goto: SITES > GLOBAL CONFIGURATION > SYSTEM > USER SETTINGS.
Set ALLOW USER REGISTRATION to NO.Turning off the ability to register altogether should do it.
Have fun!

John.</blockquote>Thanks John,
I forgot about that feature. I used to that before with some sites (Joomla 1.0) a long time ago.
However, this drastic approach is not my preference because I wanted legitimate users to be able to register and login and to access designated sections, categories and/or articles.
Thus, to address the iisue, I started using the Community Builder Registration/Login Kit and the Captcha, I thought I could drastically reduce the automated spam registration to a minimum.
It is not working. There are still too many spam (bot) registrations.
I will try your suggestion with one site. I hope it works. I will report back here what happens. If this is the only solution — I have to go to Joomlapolis, to check if they have any other ways to refine the screening of registrants.
Before Joomla, I used TikiWiki, they have a very granular Registration/Login feature and did not encounter this problem.
