January 13, 2011 at 2:30 am #158674i was also thinking to migrate to 1.6,
but lather i changed my mind.cause there is not too much extensions for this.
without extension K2 blog site will not be better. J1.6 have some changes in their article manager, but it cannot be compared with K2.:((so wait till your developers update it to 1.6 compatible.
and most of my favorite extension were not updated yet, If you are familiar with codes then just play with it.
there is not too changes in template, some new line were added and changed,

January 13, 2011 at 3:10 am #371573I beg to differ. Just the addition of nested categories and the removal of the section/category straight-jacket makes it worth upgrading to Joomla 1.6. The majority of template designers will update their offerings for j1.6. The same for most major extensions. The remainder of extension developers that do not offer a J1.6 version can easily be replaced by multiple alternatives.
K2 and J1.6 are not the same. It is not an either-or question.

January 13, 2011 at 3:25 am #371578I’m going to agree with ithacaindy, j1.6 already has alot of extensions available to it (I know joomlart has already released alot of 1.6 extensions) developers develop for the market.
Alot of my exsisting sites my not get an upgrade for some time, but all new projects, especially ones that need the ACL will be 1.6… actually scratch that they will all be 1.6 its that much better.
edit: while I’m watching K2 with interest I’d compare some of it’s functionality to j.16 and I haven’t found 1.6 lacking in any area yet. ACL and friendly SEF’s also make things much easier, set it up and have a play would be my best advice.

January 21, 2011 at 7:04 pm #373069I have to agtee with above. Only thing that would make you think twice right now is if you have huge site with multilingual options. That is a only drawback since default J!1.6 language manager basically means you have to make new sections and articles. Which is a pain.
ACL is awesome and nested categories is a huge plus. And all major extensions are already being developed for latest version of Joomla, so in fact it would be crazy to start new projects in 1.5. And would be recommended to slowly transfer old sites but no hurry.

January 21, 2011 at 10:44 pm #373084I would say take some time to learn it and don’t rush to migrate if you already have a fully working J1.5 site. If you are developing a new site and all of the extensions you require are available then fine, go for it.
With any new release as big as this there will be problems I expect to see a few bug fix releases of not only Joomla 1.6 but many of the larger extensions over the coming months. As such I would heartilly recommend a little patients whilt the dust is allowed to settle.
January 24, 2011 at 12:41 am #373354Dude, you have a point. There isn’t to many extensions yet out for it, but hell I can’t wait to upgrade. The admin interface is so much better IMO.

January 24, 2011 at 2:19 am #373361I agree the backend is light year’s ahead of J1.5. The real problem was J1.6 is such a departure from 1.5, that there is no emulation, as was available in J1.5 to run J1.0 extensions. This means every extension needs to have a native J1.6 version created, and it is like the ‘chicken-or-egg’ for developers: should they wait until 1.6 is mature enough for their extension, or do they release a 1.6 version now, helping the new OS mature.
