drarvindc;121449Yup, the only thing that has now emerged more impressive is your “most in one module” (what name do you plan to give it btw?). Was staring at it for a long time, wondering how could you blend it all so well.

Forget what i said about the site in the past few days, but as on today your “most in one module” and “customer login” module makes the site stand apart from the lot. :-*

It’s actually 2 modules, a couple of index.php hacks, some custom graphics, and a whole lot of css modifications. 😉
Oh and the login module included a VM login module hack, a custom graphic, and a couple of css mods. 🙂
I’m glad you like it. 😎

Magento is not recommended by my host Rochen (who also host the Joomla home site). It is too resource intensive, besides that my main goal is to have a reason for people to stick around my site. The best way to do that is to give them interesting stuff to read and look at. So for that reason alone I am going to stick with Joomla.

Now on to the flash sites. I wish you had made that statement in the SEO thread because I would have warned you away from all flash sites. They are horrible for SEO purposes, and the less flash you use the better.

I wish flash wasn’t so bad for SEO because it lives up to it’s name and there are some really flashy sites out there.

Thanks again for the compliments. :)</blockquote>

The compliments are meant real,, I really like the site indeed. But to the statement of Rochen, okay, they host Joomla, they sponsor Joomla, run the forum as admin, so run the run Joomla and are not really a Magento optimized host, where there are others and the sites loads fasts as it should be. So this is also some bit competition for Joomla and Rochen as VirtueMart requires the use of Joomla (and needs a Joomla optimized host…;)) and can’t really compete with Magento anymore by now and there is big issue with VM too, as it slows down the performance same way as Magento does, especially as it works with Joomla and is not a stand alone outsourceable software. I switched to Magento, before the project would be lost, as VM is not more the way to go and I built a mall(=fancy, feature rich, the bigO) like shop, a bit more complex, a bit more features needed and only Magento can bring this right now without sky rocketing my costs on still more needed customizations into a nearly lost VirtueMart system.

Okay SEO is important when you sell products you can’t list in certain specialized search engines which are then optimzed etc.. Still I would say, with some bit extra work can one make a full flash site same SEO Friendly as any other, (hidden text menus, hidden content for SEO only etc.) but I would also never use Flash as shop or selling system, just for sites like for designated purposes, just mentioned it due to the topic “photographic” and I love flash sites, as long they do not look immaturely.

I think that is the original intention of the SOTM, there is no rule that any site shall look like the demo but an unmentioned guideline that a site should not look like the demo at all anymore…Okay, sites like the JA Teline II will always look like the demo, but most the others should not be recognizeable on the first look as that what they were before the customizations were done and were done properly. Some make it worse, some make those better, mostly the ones win that make it better and do not just add some new text and new pictures for example.

I’m not knocking Magento. I did look into it well over a year ago. Check the forum over there for some posts from me. I also looked into Open Freeway and I asked the same questions it that forum as well. Those questions were about an online mall solution to which the Magento team said was not on the horizon. Open Freeway was at least willing to consider the feature. In fact they even started a poll as a result of my posts. Unfortunatly neither one of them have impimented the feature, so I’ll have to wait for the time being as the commercial options are either too expensive or not feature rich enough for my planned pourposes.

VM although somewhat buggy can be whiped into shape by doing a search in the VM forums. I’ve been using it for so long now that it is fairly easy for me to get it to do what I want, and besides that it is fully intergrated into Joomla. A big plus when you want include content plugins and the like into it, or include VM stuff into Joomla content.

In my opinion it is more important for the shopping cart to intergrate into my content site than to have to have a bridge or even click out of the site to shop. I prefer having everything in house so to speak.

Now Rochen is not the final say in web hosting, but if they are the web host of the software that runs all my sites, that was good enough for me to at least try them and now that I have tried them I am very happy and if they say that Magento is too resource intensive I’ll stay away (at least for now).

Just a note here* Rochen does not say you can’t run a Magento site, you can run any kind of site you want.

I had 1and1 hosting for 6 or 7 years but my sites crawled and it took forever for page loads. With Rochen my site loads way faster, even without cacheing and the like. Even though my cost went from 9.99 per month to 26.00 per month, I am very happy with them so far and besides that now I am also a web host myself and I already have one client who by paying for a half a year in advance has paid for 2+ months of that hosting account.

It will only take a couple more plain html hosting accounts to pay for the whole year.

So to sum all of this up, to each his own. I can see that you have been around the block when it comes to building websites and like me, you have formed opinions along the way. There is nothing wrong or right about either of our opinions, it is just personal prefrence.

In the end the only thing that is really important when it comes to building/running a website is that you make money. (unless you’r the guy who started Craigslist and you don’t need the money). 😉

So do you think Collectiblesvault should be nominated? Do you think it’s modded enough?

Yes, I would just rethink the green font color in general and maybe to complete customizations in the footer region. I think the metal style will look quite better with some other text color and the footer should be modded same as the rest of the site or totally different but same modded, like a wood board or craftsman table as footer.

Maybe you should also get some more contrast to the site, not suddenly some wood style all over the site, but why not or also something that fills webpage2mind-space when looking at the site, like some bit influence from Yootheme would be interesting…they play around with a lot of those stuff you did with this site, maybe you get some idea when you look at the Pinboard template and some others of them…not to copy those, but about the types of mods I mean.

I have been doing all that but it came to the point where all further needed modifications would have cost me money I would not more like to spent on it.

Now I also mean mall as equal to the large retailer stores, also when the multishop capability is already implemented into Magento and should work out quite good for such a scenario, VM is not more up2date but fills some space between stand alone shopping systems like Magento and CMS only. But as soon the store shall be better than the Heineken Fan Store, built with PHP Shop, the root of VM, still same as VM through and through it will cost money I rather spend into a Magentoshop.:)
