During the past year one of the things that impressed me was the use of immediate feedback when it came to online donations to US Presidential Candidates, particularly on Ron Paul’s website where there was a Flash file that was constantly updated every few minutes with the current donation amount (in relation to the goal amount) and with the latest donator names (and locations) cycling through on the screen.

I was thinking it would be extremely useful (it could even be used on the Joomla site itself to good effect and on any number of nonprofit sites) if a component/module were created that mimicked this functionality on a Joomla website.

I envision this extension with the following structure/functionality:

1. Component
2. Flash/Ajax Module
3. Additional Non-flash (Ajax-powered) Modules

The Component would be able to handle Authorize.net, Paypal, Amazon, and perhaps a few other payment methods and would take in a donators information in the frontend.
The Flash Module would show the current donation amount in relation to the goal amount (.FLA file would be provided but maybe there’d be a way to modify it easily). An additional idea would be to forego Flash and instead use Mootools to create a similar effect (this would definitely make the skinnability of the component much simpler since it’d be simple images/XHTML/CSS rather than Flash). In this case there would be two layers: a foreground image with a transparent hole (from bottom to top it would represent the entire goal amount) and a background image that would show through (the background image would represent the current donation amount in relation to the goal amount).

As I began thinking of this only a few minutes ago I immediately thought of how useful it could be to the Joomla team and the project as a whole in setting fundraising goals (for various Joomla-related purposes). With such a strong community and so many people benefiting from the project all over the world I think that we could all spare a few dollars, pounds, euros, pesos, ruples, etc. every few months in the name of the project :-).

I’d like to hear what others have to say about this idea and to find a few people that would be interested in helping out.

I posted the above originally on the Joomla forums over the weekend but I was wondering if this might be a good idea to mention here on the JA forums since technically we have the Extensions Club as well, and it’s in need of some new additions :-).

And as I mentioned not only would it be usable by people running for office but also for smaller nonprofits who could use something dynamic on their pages to show people that their contributions are contributing towards the goal (that’s what would be the biggest draw of this extension).
