February 2, 2008 at 3:41 pm #125424Hi!
I am a Joomla-nooob and new to JoomlArt, so the problem lies not necessarily with the template… 😉
(edit: it IS problem with the quickstart package, thats clear in the meantime. And to avoid misunderstandings: I just switched to Joomla, but have worked with a bunch of CMSs over the past years and administer my own servers, so noob is relative… 😉 )Still:
just installed Fagus 1.5 Quickstart (clean install, no other components etc. yet), turned on the search engine friendly URLs (with mod_rewrite, with extension, without both and whatever combination… 😉 ) and the only things I get are 404s
Did not have the problem with previous Joomla 1.5 (vanilla) installs on the same server and with several themes…
Any ideas?
URL of the test site:

February 3, 2008 at 11:46 am #238066Hi Martin
Looking at the contents of teh files you are trying to call, there is only the error (404) text in the actual files the links are working and calling the correct files but the content of the called files is already the 404 error message ….. I include a screen shot of the site showing the file structure and the contents of one of the files etcchange the content of the html file to something else then try to call it again

Hi ShannonN, – and thanks for the hint.
actually there are no such files…so nothing to change. For some reason the rewrite function for search engine friendly URLs creates these wrong links and Joomla of course does not find the corresponding article because something is messed up – but what?
I noticed many of the reference sites of Joomlart do not use SEF and mod_rewrite… is this a general problem with the themes here and 1.5 ?
this install of Joomla is working perfectly WITHOUT trying to use SEF URLs. The demo content is there and can be called, the menus work – everything fine. As soon as I activate SEF, the whole thing becomes a mess….
If you look at http://www.elfenwald.org/joomla (clean Joomla 1.5 + demoinstall of the Page theme from Yoo), it works well with SEF enabled, so it is not the server or me being to stupid to rename a .htaccess… 😉
any other ideas? Anyone running Fagus with 1.5 stable and SEF enabled and working??
Thanks!

MartinI haven’t had a chance to play with 1.5 and sef yet however I’d not enable Joomlas sef url function but use a third party extension based sef ? I’ve used Open sef befor on 1.012 Looking for info on sef I found this site http://www.joomlaseo.net/Joomla/SEO/OpenSEF-Joomla-Component.html it may be useful, I haven’t looked at it yet as its 12:15 am here in oz and I have to get up at 6 am etc etc hope this helps you if you want to discuss sef and seo in general PM me for a contact email addy I used to do a lot of seo stuff that got good results 🙂 Cheers ShannonN

February 4, 2008 at 10:51 am #238175Thanks again Shannon!
I played a bit more with it – it is definitely a problem with the quickstart package.
I tried different combinations:
- vanilla Joomla 1.5 stable + Fagus 1.5 without demo data: SEF works
- vanilla Joomla 1.5 stable + Fagus 1.5 plus demo data from 3rd party theme: SEF works
- Fagus 1.5 quickstart package clean fresh install with Fagus theme enabled: SEF all links broken
- Fagus 1.5 quickstart package clean fresh install with standard Joomla theme enabled: SEF all links broken…
looks there is something wrong with this package – without SEF enabled it works, with SEF its a mess.
Since a quickstart package is supposed to provide a quick start 😉 I would love to hear of a solution (even more since I asked if there was a working 1.5 quickstart package before ordering my subscription and the answer was a resounding “YES!”)
Maybe it is a conflicting setting that is enabled by default in the quickstart package, maybe its something in the sample data left over from previous versions – no idea.
Hope someone from the Joomlart team can check this or point me into the right direction to get this fixed. Thanks

February 4, 2008 at 12:46 pm #238179I did a clean install – so this should not matter, right?
BTW – I installed this package on a different server as well, just to make sure if it is a problem with sitting in a subdir – but the same effect.
The quickstart package for Fagus 1.5 just needs a fix…

February 7, 2008 at 12:57 am #238417Posted to keep track of this problem. It is showing up in all Quickstart packages. SEF seems to be part of the problem. I would like to know what the resolution is.

February 7, 2008 at 9:06 am #238451miccas has offered to check out my Fagus test install and work on that weird problem that shows up with all quickstarts except Barite.
I will update the thread here once there is a solution.

Actually Barite has the same problem. Read this thread: http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/sef-does-not-work/

February 13, 2008 at 9:53 am #239061Just to finish this unpleasant story:
Several days ago Miccas offered to check the problem on my server.
I submitted the needed admin login information (btw it would make more sense to solve a general problem with your quickstart packs on your development server, where you have full control). So far: no questions, no feedback, no solution, no updated quickstart packs. Just silence.
JA staff should be back from new years holiday now – I have submitted a ticket in your not-so-easy to find helpdesk system.
Please solve this problem during the next days or issue a full refund.

February 13, 2008 at 12:47 pm #239075Thanks Hung!
looking forward to a solution.
I do not care if there are a few minor bugs that can be fixed later with updated template files, I just need a working quickstart with basic stuff like SEF working so I can start working on the relaunch and the link structure (=search engine indexing…) has not to be changed several times…

The only answer to my support ticket (HOG-670348) so far is a standard one asking for the information (live url), etc. which I already posted here and linked from the ticket as well…
And the newly released quickstart packs based on J! 1.5.1 (like Hadar – see sample install here) still have the same bug…
If you do not intend to make your quickstart packs SEF-compatible, just say so.
Otherwise get it fixed, please.I personally will request a refund on Feb 20 in case this annoying bug is not fixed til then.
