I created a menu “Fixel category Blog”
The first category the first article appears 600×600 (2×2) instead of 300×300 (1×1)
All other articles appear correctly 1×1.
The same issue happens in all “Fixel category blogs” I am using

When I check your demo site, all Fixel category blogs contain a blank 2×2 block at the beginning.

Is this a workaround ?

I think that is not an article, is JA Masshead. Go to modules and filter looking for it, disable and that’s all.

With category blog layout, all items as “Leading Articles” always appear at size 600×600 (2×2). If you don’t want to show those, set “Leading Articles” (in tab “Blog Layout”) to “0”, see the screenshort for reference:
