August 14, 2013 at 9:08 pm #189746Hello,
I installed fixel quickstart but the template doesn’t show in the template list. I also noticed that all of my products in joomshopping were gone. I restored a backup so luckily the shop is up again but there still is a problem for users to login.
What is the difference between quickstart and the template? This is obvious a live site and the sales person advised me to install quickstart. Was that a mistake? Should just the template be installed?

August 14, 2013 at 9:23 pm #502254I think there may be a little confusion here. The quickstart is a complete build of Joomla and cannot be installed on an existing site. As JA Fixel (and any modern template) is quite a complex beast it is recommended to start any new site with the quickstart. However in your case that is not possible, you would need to install the template and extensions separately then set them all up. Currently as the documentation is not available (but coming very soon) the best way to replicate all the settings would be to install the quickstart on your local machine (using a tool such as WAMP, XAMPP, MAMP etc) and compare all the settings. However, if you have never attempted such an upgrade before and are not familiar with T3 then I would strongly recommend you wait a couple of days until the documentation is available.

August 14, 2013 at 10:12 pm #502256Wow, thanks for your answer.
I am used to installing extensions and assigning them to positions etc. I also installed and set templates before. Is there a difference installing this template? Should I really wait or can I just go ahead and install the template and the extensions?
Another question: The large image that links to the Content slideshow 1. Is that the content slider?

August 14, 2013 at 10:17 pm #502257If I were you I would do the upgrade on a local copy rather than on your live site. Are you familiar with running a test setup using Wamp or similar on your desktop? If so take a backup of your live site using Akeeba and install it locally and in a separate folder so you can compare settings and not mess up your live site. As for the slideshow see my last post in this thread for details of that – http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/what-is-the-method-used-to-send-the-images-to-the-slishow/

August 15, 2013 at 3:00 pm #502344I am happy to say I restored a full backup and my site is working fine again.
Now I have a few other questions.
When is the documentation going to be ready?
Currently my site is 2.5. I wonder if it’s better to do a new 3.0 install like a new site then switch/upgrade my site. Would this work?Phill ModeratorPhill

August 15, 2013 at 3:24 pm #502348The documentation for JA Fixel will be out when the new JA documentation site is launched. Hopefully this will be very soon. Arvind stated the end of the week in another thread, I am certainly looking forward to it. As for J2.5 personally I would stick with it unless you are 100% sure that all your extensions are J3.x compatible. The upgrade from 2.5 to J3.x is not too hard in most cases, nothing like the migration from J1.5 was so hopefully you would not have too much pain when the time comes.

August 15, 2013 at 3:40 pm #502350Instead of waiting, maybe I can pay for the install. My questions then are:
1) If I order now, how long will it take for you to do the installation?
2) what do you think is the best way to go. I have many extensions, all of them have a 3.0 version but I wonder if I need them all. Like JFB connect. With your template I see that people can already add facebook comments to articles so I assume, I won’t have to use that anymore.

August 15, 2013 at 4:53 pm #502361The JA Installation service is only a quickstart install. If that is what you want your data would not be migrated and you would have a site similar to the JA Demo of Fixel. JA charge $40 for this and it is usually completed within 24hrs. But I think that is not quite what you are after. From the sounds of it you need your current site updating with the new template? Currently, JA do not provide that service but there are many great freelancers out their who would love to take on the task for you. However, most are not going to be familiar with this template so would probably also want to see the documentation.
As for your extensions you probably would not need all of them. I would stick with upgrading your current template on your current build (locally or on a separate area on your web hosting) then upgrade it to J3.x.x. Trying to do too much in one go often leads to trouble.

August 15, 2013 at 7:22 pm #502373Ok, so I think I am missing something here. I did a new fresh installation of Joomla 2.5 then did the fixel quick install via the extension manager l but I still don’t see the template. The site looks like a basic joomla site. What am I missing or is fixel an installation in and on itself?

August 15, 2013 at 8:00 pm #502378Yep, missing something completely. The quickstart includes Joomla. So you unzip the quickstart just as you would if you were using the Joomla zip. It is a complete install, just make sure you install the sample data in the last section of the install script. This guide is a little out of date but the premise is good – http://www.joomlart.com/blog/tutorials/how-to-clone-the-demo-using-quickstart-installation-a-step-by-step-guide

August 16, 2013 at 3:13 am #502401You should seriously talk to your sales people. The link sent to me during a chat was one showing doing the install from the installer.
Anyway, I got it to work in a new folder but now I would like to use my own articles and menu for starters. What is the best way or tool to do this?

August 16, 2013 at 6:54 am #502428Data migration is always going to be the hardest part. Some parts can be done with tools such as j2xml available here – http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migration-a-conversion/data-import-a-export or maybe one of the other tools there. I honestly think you are going to need someone to assist you so it may be worth hiring a freelancer.

August 16, 2013 at 2:05 pm #502500More questions about the template:
Where/how do I adjust the facebook and Twitter apps?
Now when you click an article link a popup opens but I want to skip the popup and go directly to the article. How can I do this?
