I also want to use font awesome…but not for menu items. I’d like to use them in place of the Department category flaticon choice.

You can change the class from "flaticon icon" to font awesome icon directly

for example you have for your department Apple article this code

flaticon fa fa-apple you can change it to i class ="fa fa-apple fa-5x"
