1. I am trying to edit an article from the front end and the ‘edit’ button is grayed out.

2. I would like to be able to edit modules from the front end but this is not currently possible.

the problem is from the custom theme you created , i checked it with fresh package and default theme on your site its working fine .>> Also you need to Enable typo tools in template options to show the article tools (print/edit) . Without it it will not work , i enabled it and its working fine .

So how do I make it so that the template works properly with a custom theme?

you need to Enable typo tools in template options to show the article tools (print/edit) . Without it it will not work , i enabled it and its working fine .

try the previous suggestion to solve the problem .

So, I went into template > General > Show Typo Tools > On
Did not enable the edit button, still grayed out.
What am i missing?

u can try to take backup of site and then compile Less to css from template options . As i remember yesterday print button is working after enable article tools .
