My suggestion would be to keep the changes to the SMF theme as limited as possible – at least at first. If you only make enough changes to allow wrapped (no login or stats) and unwrapped options to the default template it would make patches and the addition of additional modules to SMF far easier for the forum admin, which can’t be a good thing. This would reduce the workload to just getting your head around the SMF vs Joomla css to acheive a common style. New icons would also be needed in some cases, but these could be made generic enough to be seperate downloads and usable anywhere if the colours didn’t clash.

The big problem for individuals like me trying to match Joomla and SMF is that we only do it once, or once in a blue moon, so you never get a grip of which css styles affect which bit, and which need to be adjusted to blend the two systems – an exact match probably isn’t necessary.
