June 4, 2008 at 6:21 pm #129305I responded at length to a number of new users who encountered problems with the QuickStart and the “Easy Browser-based Installtion” of Joomla, so I am posting how I do it here so that I could just point this link to others encountering the same problem.
Also, my procedure is more detailed because I found the “general instructions” provided by more experienced users not enough detail, had I been in the learning process yet. Furthermore, the link cited by Hung in the sticky is broken.
General Steps for the QuickStart Installations (from the perspective of one with no scripting experience):
**********************
Here is a Browser-based installation from Joomla itself.http://help.joomla.org/content/view/39/132/
This is intended for Joomla installation but it will work also for the installtion of the Quick Start that includes both the Joomla and the complete JA Teline II kit (or for that matter any Joomlart template kit) — that is why it is called a QuickStart, you install them at the same time.
Please read the link carefully, perhaps even several times. It is intended for Joomla 1.0.x and not for Joomla 1.5.x. There are more steps in the installation of Joomla 1.5.x and if you make any error in the added steps, it will cause problems that you might have encountered.
**********************Here is how I do the QuickInstall (just the summary outline, note to follow below) intended for Joomla1.0.x or the QuickStart Kit for Joomla 1.0.x.
1. Download, unpack, and upload via FTP.
Cryptically, I record the multiple tasks as follows:Joomlart Teline II (QuickStart: ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2) downloaded 20080523, unpacked and uploaded 20080523 installed 20080524
Note that I also record when I started the installation.2. While the upload is taking place, use your control panel to create: database name, username and password. Then grant all permissions to the username to access the created database.
Database and User (Summary only)
MySQL database siteusername_dbname added.
MySQL user siteusername_adminusername with password 2xKo6s#p17Na3etc added.
Granted permissions on MySQL database siteusername_dbname MySQL user siteusername_adminusername.the above is for a shared server:
where:
siteusername => main username assigned to a domain. In a shared server environment, the siteusername distinguishes the databases created for the domain from databases created for domains by other accounts in the same server.adminusername => username of the administrator for this installation (for security, I use a different name from one used for the domain, or the login administrator name to manage the the site.
2xKo6s#p17Na3etc => password used by administrator for this installation (for security, I use a combination of numbers, small and capital letters, and if host allows, I include symbols)
dbname => name of the database for this installation, after I install the entire Quickstart folder, I rename it for example as jte10x00 to indicate that it is a Joomla 1.0x-Teline II (jte10x) and since I may install several, its full name would be jte10x00. I use the same name for the database, so there is no confusion if there are many installations in the same site
note that it is an underscore that separates siteusername_dbname and siteusername_adminusername
3. Check your phpMyAdmin that indeed, a siteusername_jte10x0
4. After the QuickStart kit was completely uploaded, make sure that all the files and folders are indeed fully uploaded by comparing with the unpacked QuickStart kit in your computer.
5. Rename the QuickStart kit.
For example “jte10x00”. Note that the rename QuickStart kit folder is the same as the dbname (see Step #2 above)
6. Start the QuickStart Installation by typing and clicking (using the pertinent names above):
7. Follow as carefully as you can, the instructions in the “Browser-based Easy Installation”.
World of advice, write down the steps, what happens, what you were asked to do, etc.8. They call the above easy install because it is really the easiest part of the work towards setting up a decent website using Joomla and whatever template you use.
This will be followed by more explanations that may help new users with limited scripting background.

June 4, 2008 at 6:25 pm #251967If you are a new user, especially with limited programming or scripting background, I suggest starting with the Joomla 1.0.x version of the JA Quickstart kit. The Joomla 1.5.x installation is slightly more complicated.
Once you have mastered using the simpler Joomla 1.0.x version of the JA Quickstart kit then you may consider progressing to the the Joomla 1.5.x.
More important, I do not consider the Joomla 1.5.x not ready yet, for many reasons discussed in another post (in response to another Joomla 1.5.x user who found it slow).

June 4, 2008 at 6:27 pm #251969From my experience after many trial and errors before I got it correctly — (now, it takes me less than five minutes to finish all the steps in #7) — if something goes wrong, it is far easier to start all over again, if you are starting with a “Clean Install”.
Do not come to the forum immediately and ask for help. First, you might wait too long before someone helps you. Even if someone is going to help you, they might not know fully what went wrong during the installation.
What to do if something goes wrong:
Re-read the procedure outlined in indicated link for the Browser-based installation from Joomla itself.http://help.joomla.org/content/view/39/132/
If you took copious notes while you were doing the installation and indeed something goes wrong, you might be able to identify it. For example, a common error by users who are not quite familiar with the QuickInstall is to forget checking the sample “data” upload in the QuickInstall procedure. Then, obviously you will not get the Demo page.
Start with everything new — new database and even a new download of the software, if you think that might be another problem. A single error in the name of a file could shut down the installation, or cause errors later even if you were able to install “successfully”.
When I first installed a Joomlart template (I have installed quite a few “Joomla alone” before that and it worked from my first install using the Easy Install outlined in http://help.joomla.org/content/view/39/132/), I could not get my Joomlart QuickStart Kit to install properly. I got many terrible advice because the ones keep on thinking and insisting that I did not know the basics.
As it turned out, there was a bad file in the JA Teline kit to begin with, the “.htaccess” (seems like a simple thing). Then, after I solved that with the help of a tip of a tutorial from MiCCASS, I was able to complete the installation, reformatted my first JA Teline. I thought everything was going well, then when I tried to create new menu entries, I got a gazillion error messages.
To make a long story short, after many many back and forth here in the forum (some were almost shouting matches, as it got ugly with some Moderators), I found out that there were quite a number of corrupted files in the Joomla 1.0.12 that I downloaded. This corrupted files persisted up to Joomla 1.0.14, but fortunately, they have now been finally corrected in Joomla 1.0.15. So, the steps taken to correct the corrupted files were not included here.
The point of sharing this experience is that more than likely, if you take careful notes you might be able to diagnose what went wrong in the first place.
As important, if you share your notes with the others here, including your site URL, version of Joomla – Joomlart template you used, then others here might be able to understand your situation better and may be able to help you solve the problem.

Hi Menalto,
Thanks for pointing that to me.
I read Hung’s, and browsed quickly through yours. First, both the focus of Hung’s and your installation is for the Joomla 1..5.x. The link to the Joomla 1.0.x cited by Hung is broken. There is also another one by instantlaw.
Also, I use simple FTP for my upload and I unpack my zip download before I upload them. If I guide someone, I must tell them how I do it myself.
More important, for many of the questions asked by new user, they are not ready yet for the Joomla 1.5.x. As you can see, the focus of my own post is the version of Joomlart kit for Joomla 1.0.x. I am aware of earlier versions of the QuickStart tutorial, (the audio was very good and have used it myself when I started but is broken for some reason.
It is obvious from this post:
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/ja-portfolio-css-validation/
that the new user does not even know that they have to rename the uploaded and unzipped kit. I am not sure if he uploaded the entire kit even or just selected the QuickStart folder within the kit.
I have responded to quite a few new users, and keep on repeating myself. Some are resorting to use the professional installtion for $40 for the QuickStart installation — the easiest part of creating their website.
Without understanding how to do a QuickInstall by heart, how do you expect some users to deal with the more diffcult task of revising the page, after that?
When I first came here, I was sidetracked and lost many many hours arguing with the more experienced posters because the suggestions given were too generic for one who did not have much training in scripting.
To be honest, if when I came here in August 2007, and you started your instructions on using the QuickStart by understanding the phpMyAdmin, I would have been thoroughly confused. Until now, I just use the phpMyAdmin to ensure that the installation went through alright.
I am more used to doing everything with just simple download, unpack, upload and the creation of the database with my
Control Panel, then follow the very simple and quite well written Easy Browser-based installation of Joomla.I took time to write this — with explanations to follow — because I have responded to a few already. I will just cite this thread, apart from citing those of Hung shown in the sticky. However, as I stated, just like yours the focus of Hung’s is for Joomla 1.5.x and not for 1.0.x. Check the link he gave for the 1.0.x and it is broken, from the few times I checked it, and also reported by others.
Having said all this, if you find this post redundant to yours, that of Hung, or instantlaw — as Moderator, you may of course, delete the entire thread.
Cornelio
N,B,
By the way, your post should be placed in the general tutorial for QuickStart Installations. Not everyone looks at all the templates forum sections.

June 4, 2008 at 7:01 pm #251980Nothing wrong here, this is intresting reading.
However, when it comes to Joomla 1.5 and 1.0.xx, if i was a new user to Joomla now and have a plan to start up a site i think i would choose Joomla 1.5. its quite two different versions to work with, both frontend and backend, and i am not sure how long time Joomla will continue 1.0.xx version.cgc0202 Friendcgc0202

June 4, 2008 at 7:08 pm #251982Note, this was posted in response to another who used the professional help to do a professional QuickInstall of JA Teline II for his site. Then, he tried to revise it, and it got messed up.
Step # 1. Download, unpack, and upload.
The critical part here is to use only the correct QuickStart folder and not the entire kit because some of them are not needed to get the Demo page. [Note to the experts here. This is how I do it, but if I missed something, that is not loaded a criticial file or folder, I would be interested to know myself. [
The QuickStart is the easiest to install. After having done my first three or five (stumbling in the process like many newbies, trying to grapple many concepts, now it takes me less than 5 minuted from start to finish — once the database, username are ready. Be sure to use the follow the browser-based installation and just follow the direction.
And, as I stated above, practice first with the Joomla 1.0.x – JA Teline II Quickstart. Just to play safe, download a new one.
JA Teline II v1.2 for Joomla 1.0.x.zip => Open (click to unzip)
=> JA Teline II v1a 1.0.x Folder
to do the QuickStart, the only thing you need from the aforementioned folder is the
Quickstart => ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2.zip
(click to open or unzip, or what others term “extract”)
ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2 => (this is all you need for the QuickStart; it includes the Joomla 1.0.15 and the JA Teline II; of course, you have to create your database and the username and password before you start)
forget the “Extensions” and the “Template” — all the files and directories are found in these folders are already part of the “ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2”
Upload the entire “ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2” to ensure that you did not miss anything.
After you have done the upload, just rename it.
[One other thing I do, I usually rename the folder
“ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2” => jte10x10
codes
jte =Joomla Teline
10x, this tells me that it is
10 => code number of the installationOne more thing, I never place it in the root directory, when I am learning a new template. Thus, the URL
http://yoursitename.org/jte10x10/
if I make a mistake and I cannot find the cause(s) of the errors, I do not waste too much time on the aforementioned installation. I start another one. In fact, I usually upload several at the same time, or while I am working on one, so that if I have unresolvable error in the previous, I am ready for the next one using a new database.
Now, I seldom make a error during the installation steps.
If you take this much patience to learn, and make sure you write down exactly what you did (including when you downloaded, uploaded and installed), in a short while you can almost install any Joomla while doing other things.
Remember that this is not the last Joomla or template that you are going to install. So, if you are serious, it is best to learn how to do it yourself. Unless of course you have a lot of money to let others do the job for you. *grins*

That is why I have sought your help many times.
I have installed the JA Teline II for the Joomla 1.5.x myself — a few of them. I am keeping them private though still until the other components are ready.
But there are so many practical reasons why I am not using the one I installed just yet.
1, It is slow — confirming TeeTide’s observation.
2. I use a few extensions that are not yet native to Joomla 1.5.x. It is true that legacy will work, but then if legacy is turned on, some extensions will not work.
3. The Community Builder is not ready yet for Joomla 1.5.x, and I am afraid, based from my last visit there,, the CB v1.2 will be bloated, they keep on adding more plugins, and they try to have one universal solution to work with the latest Joomla 1.0.x, 1.5.x and also Mambo. The way they work, by the time they are ready, another Joomla update, for both Joomla 1.0.x, 1.5.x, may be around.
That is why I am looking for a simpler registration-login gatekeeper, as I posted here, and desired by a few people because I am tired of waiting for Joomlapolis.
Anyway, the more important reason why I am sticking with the Joomla 1.0.x — JA Teline II is that I really want to understand how it works fully because I am deploying them in many sites the moment I get it to work (and for reasons stated above, I will stick to Joomla 1.0.x for awhile).
It seems there are so many quirkiness in the JA Teline II that I have been able to do with both GavickPro and Joomlart templates, that does not seem to work. I am at a lost as to why that is happening.
For example, when I make a copy and rename JA News, just like what I have been discussing with Valic, it does not seem to behave just like the clones of other modules, like the “Hot Topic”. I could clone them, place them elsewhere, reformat the layout, etc., and these clones work. I could make them specific to show only in specific sections, etc.
But not the clone and renamed JA News. It does not even show. I will post a different thread on this when I have more time, and understood it better. This is very critical for me because I wanted the Intro page of each section much like the layout of the Intro page of JA Teline II right now.
The only dfifference is that in the Intro for the Section page (as oposed to the Home page):
“JA Frontpage clone (for each section)”
selected news from the different categories of a section“JA News clone (for each section)”
Categories (instead of Sections)
with articles ordered properly in each categoryThis is not the format now for the sections in JA Teline II. Obviously, valic could do it, and it should work the way I thought it should but I could not make it to work. Valic is trying to explain it to me, but there is some languange barrier.
So, if you can share a tutorial (more details please on the above issue meant for the “tech challenged” like myself *grins*), then I would be very grateful.
