Hi there,
Does Joomlart have an extension or have already written code to allow a Joomla 1.5.8 site using Pyrite to warn visitors who are using IE6 there browser is out of date ?
Anyone got any suggestions on how to achieve this ?
Cheers

January 15, 2009 at 7:35 am #286538Thanks Jason thats exactly what I wanted. I started down the track of copying over the files etc from one of the RT themes I have, however not quite as easy as it seems.
However in the mean time I found this which does a similar job – http://www.templateplazza.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,7/func,select/id,31/

January 15, 2009 at 4:20 pm #286649That’s about 25% of your visitors are going to get that message.
Personally I think anything telling a user about their system is a bad idea and is usually only seen in ad riddled popup type site.
You need to change to this anti-virus – You have Spyware – Your browser needs updating – Your firewall is no good.
It cheapens a site and is often a sign of a dodgy site to begin with.
Much better to have your site work properly with IE6 in the first place.
Just my 2 cent…

January 15, 2009 at 10:32 pm #286701Just use Yootheme’s IECheck, it works without a pop up and tells users with a simple bar on top of the screen that their browser is outdated. You can also enable some links to the prominent alternatives like FF, Opera, Safari and also to IE7 in the admin. No pop up, no gimmicks, just some bar on top of the site. (It actually also warns users when using the current IE8 BETA)

Actually one of the good things by Yootheme and also useful. I think IE6 users must be educated. You also take care of kids that play with unsafe toys, same it should be with IE6 as a browser. Sometimes people act like kids so to add such tool will sometimes help.

January 16, 2009 at 12:00 am #286709Now you are not only Customer Support Manager but also Custom Script Programmer…? I think a lot will like a tool like that coming from Joomlart.com, not to have to take the walk down to Yootheme etc. no more…;)

I looked at solutions like this, but in my case I decided not to use such a warning…as much as I hate the seven-year-old browser, I don’t want to “preach” to my users or tell them what they need. If they haven’t switched to a more modern browser yet, they are either completely oblivious to the issues or they know the issues and don’t care. Also, some corporate users have no choice but to use this outdated browser for various reasons. So I gave up and just figured I’ll make sure my site works reasonably well with IE6, rather than try to lecture my users. Of course, your mileage may vary. That’s only my approach, but I’m not saying everyone should share my philosphy. 😉wooohanetworks Friendwooohanetworks

You could also do the ol’ fashioned american way….maybe some more will follow as it looks like fun to do so…and fun is gooood!
Feel free to download this file when you like…
