answering my own question, yes.

comment out or remove:

echo $splitter.JA_News::textprocess($nexttitle, $iconvenabled).$splitter.JA_News::textprocess($prevtitle, $iconvenabled);

In JA News 1.2beta, it is line 141 at the end of the file.
