Ok, at the moment I really want to crawl under a rock have a good cry. But I want to use/install the template I downloaded so here I am, feeling very embarressed and foolish. :-[
I’ll fess up I am a complete newbie to this. This is what I thought I had to do:
* download joomla
* then download the template I wanted in zip format.
* go to administrator on my site an click on site templates,
* click on new template and choose the downloaded template on my pc in zip format
* click on upload and install.I thought I would have a template then to work on. :-[
This doesn’t work so obviously I am doing something wrong and this is more complicated than I thought, could someone please help me out with what I am supposed to do?anisjolly Friendanisjolly

July 17, 2008 at 7:53 am #260424hi happy scrapper
have you tried to unzip the zip file? is it a quickstart file or just the template file?
I assume you’ve already got joomla imstalled hence you’re trying to install it through the admin? – also which version of joomla are you using?

July 17, 2008 at 8:00 am #260426Download and install Joomla, configure Joomla to work first. Then download the template you wanna use(try to unzip the template package first at your computer since Joomlart have packed quickstart, extensions and template in same files, this might not be at Olrya but maybe).
Then go to Extensions>Install/uninstall and find the templates zip file and install it. Then go to Extensions>Template Manager to set the template to default.(this was for Joomla 1.5).For Joomla 1.0.xx: Go to Site>Template Manager>Site TEmplates, press new at top right and find the zip file to install and install it. The go to Site>TEmplate Manager>Site TEmplates and set the one you installed to default.
You can also unzip the package at your computer, so you have a folder called ja_olrya, and you can use FTP and transfer it to the templates folder of your site. This would be in the templates folder in root of your site.

July 17, 2008 at 8:48 am #260446OK, I have downloaded Joomla, both versions (I wanted to make sure I had the right one for my template). How do I configure Joomla to work? I looked in my “all programs” menu and it’s not showing there. I have 1 Joomla folder is in my “program Files” folder, not sure which version. What do I do with it?? (When I said I was a newbie I really did mean it).
I have unzipped the template and now have two folders with lots of files and folders in them, Quickstart and Template.
I have tried this process:
<blockquote>For Joomla 1.0.xx: Go to Site>Template Manager>Site TEmplates, press new at top right and find the zip file to install and install it. The go to Site>TEmplate Manager>Site TEmplates and set the one you installed to default.
</blockquote>I get the following error when I try to upload. <blockquote>Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory.
</blockquote>When I unzipped the file I ended up with 2 folders Quickstart and Template, each of these folders have a ja-olrya zipped file in them, which one should I be uploading?
I am so sorry for being so daft, I really thought this was going to be simple. 😮

This is where I am trying to upload and install the template to.
I have tried the steps you provided for joomla version 1.0, with the ja-olyra zip file from the quick start folder and from the template folder.

July 17, 2008 at 9:08 am #260463ITs the Template folder and inside there you have a zip file with the template in, thats the one to upload.
Who is your host btw?
Try to go to the admin panel and go to System>System Info and the Permissions tab.
Does it say Writeable and green on all there or is it red and unwriteable?1 user says Thank You to Menalto for this useful post
July 17, 2008 at 9:13 am #260465I get these error messages when I try to upload and install the ja-olyra zip file from the templates folder.
<blockquote>ERROR: Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.
Installation file not found:
/home/scrapman/public_html/media/install_487f09b3bcb29/</blockquote>And I get this error message when I try ot upload and install the zipped ja-olyra file from the quickstart folder.
<blockquote>Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory</blockquote>
I get the same error message if I try and upload the full unzipped ja-olyra file.

July 17, 2008 at 9:21 am #260473For the first error message, you dont install the templates zip file itself.
For error message two, read my post above and let me know the result.
Easy way:
Unzip the template at your computer, this means you have a folder called ja_olrya,inside that folder you have a file called index.php + some more files, a folder called images, a folder called css etc.
Use FTP and upload it to your site. This folder goes into the templates folder in root of your site.1 user says Thank You to Menalto for this useful post
July 17, 2008 at 10:36 am #260488:-[
*OK – I downloaded the ja_olyra file to my desktop (zipped)
*I unzipped this file and ended up with 2 folders, “Quickstart” and “Template”
*There was a zipped file “ja_olyra” in the template folder, I tried to upload this and got an error message (see above).
* I unzipped the ja_olyra file in the template folder and now have the following”
css (folder
images (folder)
ja_menus (folder)
ja_module (folder)
scripts (folder)
blank (HTML document)
footer.php (file)
index (HTML Document)
index (PHP)
ja_olyra_template_v1.2_1.5.x (zipped file -will not upload, if unzipped generates another menu identical to this one)
ja_templatetools.php (PHP FILE)
ja_vars.php (PHP File)
params (configeration Settings)
template_thumbnail (PNG file)
templateDetails (XML Document)I have checked all the folders for anything that looks like a template file and tried to uploaded it with no success. Please in baby steps explain which file of which folder I am supposed to try and upload?
OK I checked out my site, there was no FTP (I got this confirmed by someone else to incase I was looking in the wrong place)
I downloaded filezilla, went though the steps and successfully created a FTP (set up user ID and password) on my website in CPANEL and connected filezilla to my website. I have a folder on my website that is empty – it contains no files? No template file to upload to?

July 17, 2008 at 10:48 am #260493This is the template folder:
* I unzipped the ja_olyra file in the template folder and now have the following"
css (folder
images (folder)
ja_menus (folder)
ja_module (folder)
scripts (folder)
blank (HTML document)
footer.php (file)
index (HTML Document)
index (PHP)
ja_olyra_template_v1.2_1.5.x (zipped file -will not upload, if unzipped generates another menu identical to this one)
ja_templatetools.php (PHP FILE)
ja_vars.php (PHP File)
params (configeration Settings)
template_thumbnail (PNG file)
templateDetails (XML Document)
Upload this folder to your sites templates folder.what is your site url?
When you created the FTP acount, did you set it to root of your server? The way you explain it now it souds like you created an FTP account for your user only, and that will give an empty folder.1 user says Thank You to Menalto for this useful post
