A new name for a company…..and I need your help to do it – my mind is blank and non-functional due to the weekend 😉

The company will be covering the following topics:

    – web design / development
    – journalism
    – sports network

I’m really struggling with names – was wondering if you creative people could help 😀

If you could focus on the sports network aspect, as this is the direction the company is to go in, that’d be great.

Just hope the domain name is also available for the names mentioned.

    Looking forward to those replies

Wow. I’ve just been looking for available domain names … not much left with the word ‘sport’ or ‘sports’ in it.

The nearest I got was ‘resporters’com’ which is currently available (hooking in with ‘reporters’ and ‘sports’)

cheers for the suggestions guys…..however keep em coming.

i was thinking of a more neutral name like ‘something’ media which could cover a vast veriety of services.

    still confused

    http://www.websportsnet.com 😀

Do not make it before searching the UK, US, whatever online database for already existing trademarks though, should not sound like an already registered trademark or it may become a legal problem later.

That is exactly what I meant with trademark issues, a site that has the name http://www.sportsjournal.com and is incorporated even without having registered the name as a trademark, has legal rights to tell an operator of site with the domain name or company name sportzjournal.com to shut down the site and operations as it is misleading users to their site…Just to replace the “s” with a trendy “z” can lead to legal troubles, most jurisdictions even see the sole registration of trademarked names or names quite similar to the trademarked name or company name is illegal. For the name http://www.sportsjournal.com which is parked by the owner, I would still check the databases, as you never know who registered it with what purpose and so on….The internet market is tricky and also I would not get the one with the “z” when users will type a “s” real often and get on a parked domain, too misleading for serious business.

One should take that serious, get some legal counseling from a good lawyer first and the last case I read about was that one of the largest ticketsellers on the internet had become some minor competition by a person who registered a name quite similar to the famous name they have, so the case went to court and the major ticketseller won the case…

Much luck! BTW, same applies to the domain ending, just with using the .eu ending when the .com is used by another party can lead to same legal troubles as they mostly have the right on that name also when another party simply uses the site for a personal site, example would be that Mr. Miller registered Miller.eu, Miller Beer Company has the rights on that name, so they can simply tell Mr. Miller, who wanted just some personal site with that name to cancel the domain registration and move the name to Miller Beer Company. I recommend to read good up to date law related site and to contact a lawyer or to really choose a name like http://www.anisports.com, which sound not bad btw, and is already registed with a sports site on it, showing a trademark next to the domainname, so to chose http://www.anissports.com when available may be tricky too, also to use .eu, and also there I would still look if anyone has registered a trademark etc. withwhatever name you choose. Yet most domain sellers advertise those alternative endings as good when someone else registered the. com already, but you know they are about making sales with that and do not have the legal obligation to warn you. So, best is to take care!

BTW, there is site located on http://WWW.JOOMLART.NET, it is made with a Joomla Template from http://WWW.TEMPLATEPLAZZA.COM take a look, I would enforce my rights right away, they do not use a Joomlart.com template, lololol!:D One could say, this is a bogus site, but looks too funny for that…;)

If you can’t come up with a name for your company, perhaps you don’t need to start one.

This is a branding issue, and branding is much more than picking a domain. There are websites that do what you are proposing. Perhaps, what is more important now is for you is to think about what makes you different. Out of thousands of websites on web development, what is special about yours? What makes your type of development different from others? What is special about you as a developer or designer? And how will that special quality translate to your work and potential clients? Essentially, you need to find your strongest points and what I call your unique selling value. Once it is clear to you, it will be much easier to determine how you shape and market your online presence.
