I’ve read through a lot of forum entries and there doesn’t seem to be an answer to the problem of restricting search results to only one K2 category.

The only way I can see to do it is with a hidden field. Is there a way to have one of the extra fields as a hidden field?

Also, the search results page is horrible. Does anyone know how this can be tidied up, please?

You should edit modulesmod_jak2_filtertmpldefault.php and input hidden field in that. The form will submit to search component. You should go to that component to get hidden value.
I hope that gets you what you need!
