It seemed to have stopped

there is a 2nd issue – there is a long delay for the image showing up in the slideshow module on the home page

Your images in the slideshow are coming from a cached folder , from a third party extension .
>>> media/mod_zentools/cache/images/remote-image-
The extension is taking time to load itself . Please contact to extension developer for its slow loading .
JA Support does not cover Third party extension support .

The answer i got from zen tools was that there were a number of script errors on the home page caused by the template

I checked your site on toolsPingdomand found that there are thrid party extension present on your homepage .
There is no>>>>>> were a number of script errors<<<<<
from template . All the css and js are coming from CDN and compressed by Third Party extensions .
There is file rocket.js that is 0byte size and taking time >>>>http://prntscr.com/4qg2n4 .
>>> http://prntscr.com/4qg3mx
+ all the css are coming from index file due to your customization or because of Third party extension .
You can compare the compare the your site source code and demo site source code to check the difference .
The issue is not coming from template . If you found errors in the template scripts . Let us know we can check it.

how this issue is from template ? You can see you are using many third party applications that are making your site slow .
css/js are not running from template . You can check the previous details for it .
You need to check your custom changes or you you need to optimize your code for fast load speed .
Such kind of work are not under JA Support scope . If There is any issue regarding template we can help .
