Just need one of those homepage articles to link to a page showing other articles, easy to do with menu.

using the above screen shot I want the ‘news’ article to directly link to

Currently the above is displayed via a menu showing featured articles of a current Category.

To summarize I want to click ‘news’ in image 1 to show featured articles of a certain category. Can I use a link via a menu item?

Yes, you can do that. First, you create a link in Main Menu to show featured articles from a certain category. Then implement a module which contains a news banner with hyperlink (just copy the url from main menu item you created before), for example you can see the Masshead module or Custom HTML module we implemented in demo site.
