December 14, 2008 at 5:10 am #282830Are we looking at quality or price here?
Mines bigger than yours and cheaper isn’t always the best route.So my options aren’t the cheapest.

December 14, 2008 at 9:00 am #282841Are you talking about a regular hosting plan for $20 a month, or a VPS.
By the way, is anyone here using a VPS instead of a regular hosting plan. Any comments about VPS plans?

December 14, 2008 at 11:53 am #282859Dosn’t really matter if it’s cheap or quality.
This way it gives people a broader selection to choose from!
A website link would help aswell!
Thanks.

December 14, 2008 at 12:02 pm #282863I would agree with Yerg… I’d rather pay a few extra $’s a month for a good service. I’ve been with some hosts, both cheap and not so cheap, who provide a terrible service so I don’t mind paying a bit extra if I know the service is going to be good.
My only fault with Lunarpages.com is that their Cpanel is incredibly slow sometimes but their outstanding tech support makes up for it.

I’ve had hosting with lunarpages a year now. I am going to renew for another year here very soon. They are the first hosting company I’ve stayed with that long. I have utterly horrible luck with hosting companies. I even had one just shut down and not tell anyone. What a nightmare that was >:(.
I have the basic linux package . I had windows hosting once, cost more and was slower so I never looked back after going linux. When I bought the package last year it was $7.95 a month now they are charging $4.95 if you do a 12 or 24 plan in advance. So I’ll be paying $3.00 a month less this year which works for me Ha. Though I think I may get a SSL plan which is going to increase my costs. They want $99 a year for a cert & charge an additional $2.95 for a dedicated IP. I really don’t know if that’s a fair price for a Cert or not, I’ve never had to deal with getting one so I still have to research it.
The only issue I’ve had over the year was once my server got set to an old version of PHP. That caused some of my site functions to stop working. I put in a trouble ticket which was answered with in the hour. Ended up taking me about 5 seconds in cpanel to fix.

December 14, 2008 at 8:16 pm #282899$99 for an SSL cert is about the going rate but I think Lunar will install if for free.

December 27, 2008 at 9:04 pm #284138I’ve just discovered JustHost (http://www.justhost.com)
They are an English Company – and they have good offers going – especially as you can get a free domain name name for life (including .co.uk domains that a lot of good servers don’t provide).* Unlimited GB’s of Space
* Unlimited GB’s of Transfer
* Unlimited Domain Hosting
* Unlimited E-Mail Accounts
* Unlimited MySQL Databases
* FREE Site Builder
* FREE Domain for Life
* FREE Instant Setup
* CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQLI also used the coupon: “50Off” to get 50% off of my option!!
No idea how long it’ll last for – but it was a very good deal.
They came very well recommended as well – 3rd on the TheHostingChart list.

December 29, 2008 at 5:30 pm #284267You’d find that they seem to want to prevent you from hosting quite a lot of data on their servers – what’s more, you’ll find that if you happened to use, say, for example 400GB they’d swiftly be in touch.
One thing to point out, they also have a term on their site which says you can’t use 25% of the system resources for more than 90 seconds, stream videos, audio, provide downloads, the list goes on.
You get what you pay for.

December 29, 2008 at 5:43 pm #284268Very true.
But I found other perfectly reasonable hosts as well who provide much lower Space and Bandwidth at maybe a few pounds less – so I thought I’d go Unlimited!This client is never going to use the entire capacity of this service so hey – no real loss for me!
I probably will use LunarPages instead of JustHost as I think they lease out servers from another company as well – eNom I think. So hey – this means I’ll pay a higher price from them compared to others.

December 29, 2008 at 5:46 pm #284269Well just to point out, nothing is unlimited. I’d email them and check what amount of resources you’d need to use before they limit you.
It’s a wise precaution. Last thing you want is the site being disabled just as you go to sleep. 🙂
