December 29, 2010 at 8:23 am #369099I have tried to use K2 and Teline IV, but K2 has some major problems when used in our standard publishing workflow.
1. There is no way to close the front end admin when using it on smaller monitors, therefore our authors either post the same article multiple times or get fed up and complain incessantly.
2. The thumbnails of all previous articles will not resize automatically and have to be uploaded manually one by one, if you have thousands of images this is obviously not an option.
3. The templating in Teline IV for K2 is great and all, but why doesnt one of the options more closely resemble the standard Teline IV design for standard article blog and full article templates? If one uses K2 as the main article base in Teline IV the excellent styling of blog layout and single articles for native Joomla articles in the template is lost. I understand its not possible with K2, but that doesnt change the validity of this point.
4. As opposed to the wonderful thumbnailing possibilities using JA Thumbnail in standard articles, the inability to define the height of images when scaling in K2 means the basic beautiful layout of Teline IV turns into a mess once my authors start publishing images of differing height to width ratios. Basically it changes from better than the New York Times to my brothers blog design.
5. The K2 commenting system is way too basic for our specific needs, whilst the JA Comments used in standard Joomla articles in Teline IV is pretty much almost perfect. If theres a way to use JA Comments in lieu of K2 comments i havent been able to find it.There are a few more conditioning factors yet, but these are more than plenty to require an alternative to K2.
Which is a **** shame since K2 does cover most of the remaining requirements well enough. So why not use Flexicontent then?
Well, its also almost great, but also has its disadvantages which i wont go into here.I would of course use standard Joomla articles, since Teline IV obvioously looks at its best when these are used, and also because of the inclusion of all the JA extensions which are necessary in our workflow- Comments, thumbnails, slideshow etc.
We cant use standard Joomla articles though due to the currently limited Joomla ACL, and the fact that we cannot have users meddling with the images folders or using any of the other functions of the wisiwyg editor since they have a propensity for redefining Murphys law upon doing so.The other two main problems with current Joomla standard articles are the limited two levels of categorisation and the inability to place articles under two categories. The standard duplicate content retort here is ridiculous, so before anyone uses it, please look at WordPress first. This is a basic flaw in Joomla, and the duplicate content excuse doesnt cut it.
So what an interesting conundrum. Here is a template that is beautifully designed, apart from the faux 3d borders which i imagine are to some peoples taste, but not mine nor any of my users apparently. A template with a sweet and funcctional menu system, and a number of other design elements which are useful but will only work if you use standard Joomla articles. If you require soem form of CCK, such as K2, you have to forego most of these benefits. Different comment system, different thumbnails, different layouts for the blog and the articles.
As with itsnexgen, i have come to the conclusion that the only solution is to find the CKK fucntionality of either K2 or Flexicontent elsewhere, somewhere that would still allow for the best of Teline IV template design for blog layout and articles to be used, somewhere that would allow the use of JA Comment JA Thumbnail and JA Popup. Teechnically jSeblod is that somewhere. jSeblod utilises com_content, albeit in quite a funky way, therefore all JA plugins and modules will work anyway, but there does remain some work to be able to use jSeblod without everyone breaking their backs doing it on their own, this was supposed to be the point of open source software.
So how about it if some Joomlart Teline IV users that are interested in this get together to fund the development.
In addition, if anyone in this forum has experience with jSeblod, enough to create a standard article input form for front end and admin, as well as create a basic jSeblod article layout similar to the Teline IV standard joomla article layout with the addition of a youtube video field and a simple image uploader which relies on JA Thumbnail for scaling etc, i would be willing to participate in funding and would like to extend this possiblity to others to participate in order to create what is required for jSeblod use within Teline, and once done share this with other Teline IV users. Just a thought. If anyone is interested please let me know.
Thanks to Joomlart for going in the right direction with so many aspects of Teline IV, perhaps i can forget about additional CCKs and plugins once Joomla 1.6 has hit its stride and Teline V is out 😀
ps if your only requirement is the need for multicategorisation, then Flexicontent is the only option so far that can handle this with any elegance.
