I am trying to increase the width of the columns at the footer,but when i increase it by 1 % it distorts the next column,i want to believe this is the css controlling the width,but have not been able to fine tune it to to increase the width of the first three columns on the left
.row-fluid .span3 {
width: 25%;
}i have tried changing from 25% to 30% and this distorts the social icon menus.

It seems that you want to use 5 columns instead of 6 as default, right? If so, you can go to administrator site > Template manager > choose your desired style > Layout tab > and change the number of column in footer block:
