June 6, 2011 at 1:35 am #164862Hello,
I was looking at the “Add Product” form find an easy interactive click option to Feature a product and be included in the “Feature Module” but cannot find such a specification.
What I am looking for is a “one click option”, just like how an article may be included among those place in the “Front Page” module in JA News.

Cornelio,
If you selected “on special” when you added a new product, it will show up in the module. Under Product Status, if you check the box, that places the item as a “Featured” item. Then in the module, you can select to show the number of “on special” or featured items you want. Or you can use the module only, I believe, by using the Category ID’s and the items will be “featured.”
I hope this answers your question.

I was trying to place the “Featured Products” after the JA News module, using existing position modules, and it was not showing up. It seems to appear only in the mass-top position.
Also, I was hoping to use a “one-click” option in the Product Information window. The “In Special” in the “Product Status” did work, as you suggested. However, I got the impression that “In Special” would be something that you would check if you are promoting discounted products.
Do you have much experience with VirtueMart? There is something that is messing up my layout in the “Shop” page. More specifically,
the number of categories appearing in each row.
I use large thumbnail image, so each row could only have three category images. However, the default is four category images per row — so with large category images, the fourth category image is pushed way to the far right. So, it does not show properly (out of the page) showing only a truncated fourth category image. I cannot find the Virtuemart module or option where I can specify
3 category images per row — not four, as shown in the Demo page.I would appreciate any help on this. I posted a separate thread, but so far no response.

Cornelio,
I have some experience w/Virtue Mart.
Support had to go in and correct the Categories for me on another template. They were not truncating properly and were misaligned. The Featured Product module should fit anywhere. (Let me check to see if mine does. I’m not using it yet.) Yes, I checked, it’s showing up in Position 8 or Position 21 one of the 3 newly positions I added to this template. (tcraw1010 or Tom) helped with adding new module positions.
I agree, I thought the “on special” meant it was discounted, as well but apparently not as that’s the only way I have discovered to have an item featured on the backend w/the store…and the other with the module itself by category ID’s.
I’d submit a support ticket with your issues. As I recall, Arvind corrected this for me.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
My best,
Avis/GeoViPS I’ve disabled my store as I’m not ready yet but will enable it for you to see the categories line up in the store as they should. I did not, however, reduce the categories. I think I have about 5 horizontally. Let me know (this won’t help you solve your problem, I know.) 🙁

Thanks GeoVi,
I was experimenting with my site today, and I was able to get it appear on a new module position site also, that was created for another new module several months ago, as suggested by khoand. It is not the correct background though (it has the color of the outside background); so I have to play with the CSS to correct this.
The most pressing issue right now for me is changing the category to three (3 category thumbnail images per row) instead of the default 4 categories per row.
I posted another thread on this, but so far no response to the previous and to this new thread.
There are still so many things to do, and we are behing the launch date already.
Have you ever availed of the forum support of Virtuemart? I browsed the forum briefly, and many unanswered threads.
I was supposed to shift to the Magento template, but so far, I did not get any answers to my preliminary technical questions. That was several months ago. That was why I have to stay with VirtueMart.
Cornelio
P.S.
So how did you change the number of categories to five (5) from the default four (4) per row? If you can share that information, then I can also do the reverse from four thumbnail categories to three.

June 25, 2011 at 4:22 am #398327Cornelio,
I tend to answer what is read last. I didn’t change the categories to 5. I actually had 4 and deleted one and now only have three. I did nothing for that to happen. I had Electronics as a category then decided against that for now.
I am unable to get the downloadables to work. I posted on VM and never got a response. I noted the Moderator where I posted was from my hometown area so I sent him a DM using that as leverage. It worked but he said he didn’t know anything about VM’s downloadable feature. (Can you imagine that?)
I would go with redShop in a heartbeat if we had the funds to do it, so like you, I’m stuck with trying to get VM to work. Support in VM’s forum is deplorable!
Just submit a support ticket here and they’ll get to it by Wednesday of next week. It takes time. I work on other issues as I wait for help here. I pray they can get both our problems solved. My launch date hasn’t been set yet and I won’t until I can get this to work. It’s the entire premise of what we’re doing, eBookselling! 😮
I’ll delete that link to my site in a bit. I like to keep things on the lowkey until I am ready to launch. I wanted you to see the three categories were aligned. I did nothing.
My best,
Avis/GeoViI have 8 subcategories (Category Tree) under one main category. Everything fell into place with the thumbnails.

June 25, 2011 at 7:39 am #398357HI GeoVi,
Do you add thumbnail images into your categories and subcategories? Without the thumbnail images, it worked actually as you stated. So without thumbnail images, if I have 12 subcategories, it would group them into four per line (row); thus, three rows (4×3).
The issue arose only after I added the thumbnail images for each category.
As to tickets here, I specify requesting help from the staff, and my posts are marked with a ticket number. Do we have to submit a “ticket” request on top of a posting here in the forum?
We are way behind our schedule for launch for the online. We have potential customers that our vendors (suppliers) want to direct to us, but the website is not ready yet — so it is an issue.
I may be forced to move the online store opening to August but my partner wants it NOW so that we can get the inquiring customers directed to us by our wholesale suppliers. Also, we hope to get some internet buzz before our September brick and mortar opening.
I only chose VirtueMart because at least I know something about Joomla and can usually solve many issues without even asking here in the Forum.
I was hoping Joomlart would provide some more support with the initial Magento technical questions I posted here — but I did not get any response that would be useful, except promises that they will do their best. So, I am not sure if I am going to buy the Magento template from Joomlart. I may be forced to look elsewhere for that, once I have time to learn Magento. That would be too bad because I like some of the Joomlart Magento templates already. However, without technical support, it would be difficult for me to transition to Magento.

What is RedShop? Is that a Magento template company?@GeoVi 249515 wrote:
Cornelio,

Nope … RedShop is a relative newcomer to the world of ecommerce components (or, if you prefer, “virtuemart alternatives”) for Joomla –> http://redcomponent.com/redshop/Personally, I’m not (yet) impressed – especially since the RedShop website developers don’t seem to see fit to provide working examples of customer sites using RedShop so prospective subscribers can see how it functions in a practical setting. I’m also not crazy about the “subscription plan” cost and, apparently, time-frame license limitation – especially considering that both VirtueMart and Magento (community edition) are open-source and free. However, with the similar limited license feature of the only real bridge for Magento & Joomla (MageBridge), I think I will, for now, stick with VirtueMart for the smoothest and (at this point in time) most versatile ecommerce platform option I still find for Joomla.

Thanks Tom,
It will be a no-no for me too, if the site stops functioning after the license expires. I never heard anything like that, for software products.
It is the reason why I stuck with Joomla for now. I know there is a team behind it, one of the core group members in fact was from my own country. Not sure if he is still around because he went home to coach a sports team, after his studies in Australia.
I am getting more familiar with the VirtueMart component. I wished there were more database to answer the issues I encountered. I browsed through the VM manual and it is too general. I have to sit down when I have more time.
One of our major suppliers uses Magento (I think they just hired some company to create their website). I was surprised to find that Joomla’s search algorithm is more thorough than the search algorithm of the Magento site of our supplier. The site though has some features that I do like.
Cornelio
N.B. Congrats on your new position here. It’s about time. If you could relay the issue encountered to the staff, I would appreciate it. I re-posted a new thread on it, but it did not get any ticket number. There was no response in the old thread,

When you post in the forum, it now asks if you need Tech Support, if so, then you provide all the admin info, including FTP and site URL. If you did not opt to do that, then yes, a separate support ticket is required. You should do this straightaway in your case to get your site up so you can launch.
When I uploaded images, I opted (you can select this) for it to auto create thumbnails. In doing this, they are automatically resized for the categories and subcategories. So yes, I have thumbnails for my subcategories, as well.
The reason I said I’d go with redShop is because they’ve answered every pre-sale question I’ve asked, and very timely. They’re considering something I requested, as well. The cost is too much without some guarantee, though. I like the look of their shop over VM.
Tom gave reasons why not to use them, I see.
Submit a ticket. They will get it resolved for you. While you had, Tom, you should have asked him! 😉
He’s great to work with. All the best. Not sure I helped at all but hope so. 🙂
