I want to add two icons to articles, displayed alongside the print and email icons. First, how do I add an icon for facebook, twitter, etc and secondly, where do I get icons that match those already used in the theme?

Have you tried the JA add ons for this? There are also may extensions available in the JED for use on sites, but please read the reviews as well as checking to be sure there are no vulnerabilities BEFORE you use any.
