November 25, 2008 at 7:51 am #135674Hi Everyone
I’ve got a section and category which are not linked to any menu.
I want to link to this specific category via hardcoding the links into certain articles in other sections and categories.
This is working fine. However, I want to change the blog layout to the following:
The only place I can normally do this with a category is if I edit the Menu item and specify it there. Is there another method of doing this as I don’t want a visible menu for this category?
Thanks

November 25, 2008 at 8:20 am #280218for this,
create an ‘invisible menu’. either in your main menu or just create a new menu
select section/category blog format
select ur section/category
input ur formatting according to your preference and savepublish ur menu and make it visible just to copy the URL for the link of the menu
then unpublish ur menu to make it invisible…use that link in your articles
the most important part of it is the ITEMID in your url. it will define how it will appear.
if u are confident, u can just take the menu id with the correct formatting and put it into your URL replacing the red partshttp://yoururl/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=103
yoururl = your url (Duh!)
section = can be section or category depending on what you wanna see
1 = the section or category id
103 = menu id (the menu must be already created and formatted using the parameters)1 user says Thank You to jsliao for this useful post

November 25, 2008 at 9:03 am #280223Many thanks jsliao.
In fact, that was sooooo close!!
I actually copied an existing section/category menu items that had the layout I required (as per screen grab above). I published this to grab the URL (wasn’t too worried, as I was only working on a test site). Copied the URL and then unpublished to hide the menu.
Now, here’s where the real problem appears!
When the menu is published, the blog layout is correct (single column, full width):
However, as soon as I unpublish the menu, the blog layout reverts to previous settings:
Do you have any idea how I can overcome this one!
I guess maybe create a new menu that is published, but not assigned to anywhere on the page somehow and then try to format the URL manually as I won’t be able to see it!!!
Thanks Again.

November 25, 2008 at 9:23 am #280229hi, what i did was to actually create a menu but unpublish the menu module. not unpublish the menu itself.
for eg, create a menu called “Dummy menu”
assign it to module position “user1” or anything u like
but unpublish the module instead of unpublishing the menu.
hope you get what I mean

November 25, 2008 at 9:55 am #280237Many Thanks jsliao … I actually attached the new sec/cat menus to an existing “keyconepts” menu/module which I knew was unpublished!
Everything is working perfectly now, thanks again for all your assistance.
