I’m trying to just change the background properties on one page of my site. I’m thinking adding a page class should do this but I’m not sure about the correct CSS code structure or about how to tell Joomla to recognize this class.

Any help?

Two points to note:
1- You have posted on the General Questions category. This does not help as only general queries should be debated here. if you are using a Joomlart template, you should use its forum

2- We don’t know which template you are using. It may help if you could provide more details or a link to your site.
