Dear sfpkent!

Please open the file: /templates/ja_quartz/css/mod_jaslideshow2.css and try to find code:

.maskDesc {
display: block;
background: #000000;
position: absolute;
z-index: 100;
cursor: pointer;
}

please change the color in the background attribute. and adjust the value for the “Description background opacity” paramter inside the configuration of the ja slideshow 2 module ( range: 0.1 => 1 )
