February 12, 2012 at 4:43 am #173830hi to all
I tried to solve this by my own – but I don´t come any further with it. Please get me a helping hand…
first my configuration:
Joomla! 1.5.23 Stable
Purity II
SEO (all 3 active)So far so good – there are too many pages indexed by google. means not only canonical file names; – many original dynamic adresses are indexed as well which is not a good idea!
This ends up in double titles and double descriptions in webmastercentral (in html suggestions). Duplicate content is created (visible) as well. What possibilities do I have to eliminate the duplicates in the google index?
I was thinking about it to do for each wrong indexed page a 301-redirect in htaccess-file.
1. Is this wise to do?
2. Is there maybe a possibility to change this behaviour internal in joomla?I do not know if I did something wrong or if this is a known issue with joomla. Browsing the internet did not get me an answer – so I try it here. Please, can someone push me in the right direction?
Thank you all very much in advance for looking at my issue.

February 12, 2012 at 9:06 pm #438123It is folly to work to remove the duplicate content without first determining what is causing it.
And the CAUSE can by any number of things…from how your host behaves with Joomla SEO settings, to specific components that do not play nicely – Azrul’s MyBlog – for instance, is notorious for this.
Solving can be as simple as utilizing the alias menu types, or turning off Search Engine Friendly URLs.
My Opinion:
Do not fear losing Search Engine ranking because of the use of a dynamic URL. Only fear those who say you will.
Ever wonder why Google doesn’t use them?If you are concerned and still want to worry with them here is a wonderful read on the nature of Joomla and Duplicate content.

thanks for answering. That´s what i did first – I synchronized alias-file names in the content-section and alias-file names in the menus.
What do you mean by “alias menu types” is it alias-file names in the menus or is that something else? And! I am afraid turning off Search Engine Friendly URLs, because our positions in the serps with our most competitive keywords is definetely the positive result of the seo option in joomla…

February 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm #438206I apologize for not being clearer.
CAVEAT: You want to try and have ONLY ONE menu item for any piece of content. Easiest way to prevent duplicate content.
That being said…it’s impossible for medium and large sites to manage all content through one menu. Joomla! allows us the opportunity for all sorts of menus (top menu, side menu, footer menu…and custom menus).
The trick is how to create multiple menus/items all going pointing to the same content without duplication.
Enter: Menu Alias
1.5
or
1.7/2.5It’s a misconception/little known fact that Core Joomla SEF does not work off of Section/Category/Article or Category/Category/Article (2.5) structure. Rather it works off of the structure of your MAIN MENU and any others. So the management of duplicate content can be easily managed by creating the right type of menu items.
So basically the good practice to get into, and the way to correct a lot of duplicate content, is to decide which menu item pointing to a particular piece of content is your PRIMARY LINK…and then any new menu items pointing to the PRIMARY LINK should instead be ALIASed to the MENU ITEM for the primary link…NOT to the link itself.
If you are using 3rd party SEF components, you should contact them for further.
Hope this is a little clearer!
John.-

February 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm #438210John, perfect!
it´s ecactly the information I was looking for. I didn´t even know what this alias menu type was…
Surprise – you saved me a lot of time. My English is probably not yet good enough to understand all this 😉
Thank you so much
