    What would I need to change in the template/stylesheets to have the frontpage section at the top (ja-news) span the whole width of the master container column and push the rest of the content below it?

    Maybe it would be easier to add a new container above ja-news that spans the whole width and publish the content I want there?

    Yes, that’s what I did. You can have it both ways. Just clone (make a copy) the JA News module, if you want to have multiple news poistions in your website, apart from the default position. Obviously, you have to change the sections that will appear in each of the clones, if you take this route.
