Ok; here’s what I do. I don’t know if it is the right thing, but it gets the job done.

Theoretically, you should be able to just try to open the site, the ‘xyz.com’ and it should open the install window. But if you try to open the install.php file, it will give that error. But http://www.sitename.com/index.php or http://www.sitename.com/installation/index.php will work also. That is what I use.

Then it walks you through the process of installation. The hard part is having the right name and passwords for the database and the ftp of that site. Remember to use ‘localhost’ as the database hostname, and with a typical shared unix based system the username and the database name will be ‘sitename_username’ and ‘sitename_databasename’.

    Good luck.

Try unzipping the qs package locally then using filzilla to ftp it to the host then try to installl via teh browser the host cpanel method of unzipping may not be distributing all files properly some may have permission issues, ftp from local you get to see permissions for each file etc etc

When we last left you, you said:
“…I then typed my domain into a browser and it gave the permission error message”

Now you say, “I tried that.” The word “that” doesn’t mean anything specific when so many things are flying around. Tell us everything. What did you try? What did it say?

    2) Is this a site that you just registered? Is it possible that the DNS hasn’t gotten to the point that you can just type. ‘sitename.com’?

Thanks, i will now delete all uploaded files and then upload the unzipped files.

Do i have to change the permission on a file?

You shouldn’t have to change the permissions.
I get “Restricted Access” when I put in the URL of “http://sitename.com/INSTALL.php
When I type in “http://sitename.com/index.php”, I get the install.

    What do you get?

When i say ‘that’ i mean that i have tried entering the domain name in the address bar in different ways.

Understood and the that. Is it a newly registered name?

I would try to make a site in another program…One page. Something simple. sitename.com/index.html Load it on the server. Does that page come up?

(Unfortunately, I am gone for 7 hours. Good luck.)

    Hi Munders
I think you are responding to my post? I’d delete the whole installation then after uploading all the unzipped quickstart folders and files be sure to refresh the main folder using the refresh button in the ftp program, I’d say to set all folder and sub folder permissions to 755 and then run your browser to start to install. make sure you have a database already created at your host and know the details needed for a host install such as, host supplied username password and of cousre teh database name but I’m sure you already know this stuff 🙂

Let us know how you get on, if you get any error messages please write them down so we can have a better understanding of what possible things are causing them etc

Good luck I look fwd to seeing a smiling face soon

i saw a few issues that were never addressed

you cannot start the install with http://sitename.com/INSTALL.php
    the correct address is: http://www.sitename.com/index.php
    or
    http://www.sitename.com/installation/index.php

if this is a new domain, has your domain propagated, if not, you will mostlikely need to access the site by
    http://ipnumbers/~domain name

next, are you on a linux host

    who is your host

do you have cpanel, plesk , or some proprietary cpanel

can you upload the QS as a zip and then go to your control panel and expand the file. It is better than uploading all the individula files manually.

if you cannot expand the file, can they expand it for you

unfortunately, not all hosts are good for joomla, even when they claim the are.

I think it would help if he first made a decent post with all the things that he already did.

Now everyone is guessing and making an effort when in fact HE should make an effort to provide all information, so that he gets the help he wants.

Bennitos, you are right, of course.

We have practically written a wiki on installation problems with this thread though~! It will be good for people later.

Yes i agree its a good thread 🙂

But half the work is already done with a decent starting post. So everyone is not guessing what the problem could be but help him right away. Would help the initial poster and the people that are helping.

All the helpfull people in here cant read minds 🙂

Yes; sometimes one doesn’t know what they don’t know and can’t put down the right things until prompted.

Sometimes the frustration of the moment makes a writer presume things that are not in evidence when they write a sloppy post.

Sometimes, it is just being lazy.

Fortunately, we are all great enough to be perfectly forgiving of any of these errors (which we have never committed ourselves~!)
