Its very simple and if you read it properly its very clear.

Start installation by typing your url to the quickstart>> that you have extracted (uploaded)

Suppose i have extracted the quickstart zip into a folder named “quickstart” then my url would be pointed to that folder.

if on localhost the url will be pointed to the “quickstart: folder : http://localhost/quickstart

if on server then url would be : http://www.yourdomain.xxx/quickstart

The installer will start the installation by pointing the above url to the folder where you have extracted the quickstart.zip.

I suppose you are new to joomla, no problem with that, but typing with such bold letters is discourgaement to us, we dont get paid to help here.

If you have completely removed your old Joomal install (inc the config file) then there will be no reference to a database so your old DB being empty or not makes no difference (until you try to fill it).

Drop or empty? Doesn’t matter once there’s nothing in them :)</blockquote>

    Thank you Scotty

    for everyones benefit

    1. I had already installed Joomla in my public_html folder – tried out some templates and some content then decided i wanted to start from scratch using the Vauxite Quickstart install. My URL is http://gs46.inmotionhosting.com/~videof5

    2. I deleted all the files from my public_html folder – except a folder called cgi-bin,a file called 404.shtml and a text file realting to my domain on the web server.

    3. I uploaded the Quickstart zip file to my public_html folder

4.I extracted the Quickstart zip to my public_html folder – this means there is no separate URL to my quickstart – its straight to my domain (http://gs46.inmotionhosting.com/~videof5) and the same as the previous install.

    5. If I type in my URL (http://gs46.inmotionhosting.com/~videof5)now I get taken to the Joomla page which asks me to remove the installation directory and i do not get the option to re-install Joomla and install the sample database. And the site uses the data form my previous install. This is the the thing that I think is confusing people.

    6. However, if I go to installation folder (before deleting of course!) http://gs46.inmotionhosting.com/~videof5/installation/ I do get the option to re-install Joomla again.

So I think the answer is (in my case):- the url you should use after uploading/extracting the Quickstart files is the one to your installation folder not the root of your site.

I am about to do the re-install now without emptying the database first – so fingers crossed!

OK – THAT WORKED!! THANKS SCOTTY.

The Joomla install wizard gives you the opportunity to overwrite your old mySQL database – its in the Advanced Settings of the mySQL set up page.

So, to make it clear to everyone – if are re-installing Joomla with a quickstart to overwrite a previous Joomla install, you should go the installation folder URL – ie the URL you should go to after uploading/extracting the quickstart files is: your host/domain… installation/index.php

in my case this was – http://gs46.inmotionhosting.com/~videof5/installation/index.php

if you go to the root url you will only get the joomla page that asks you to delete the installation folder and you will not be given the chance to re-install joomla and install the sample database.

The other option (i guess) is to create a new directory on your server and upload/extract the quickstart there, then it will be treated as a completely new install – ie there will be no existing data in the mysql database.

Hi, I’m new to the forum, and I’ve been trying to do my first install as well. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled the JA Opal template many times now unsuccessfully. I even reinstalled Joomla at least three times.

I get up to the point where I am asked to delete the installation folder (that is the first and only thing that I see). So I delete it. Then, I get the Joomla page, so I logon as an Administrator to change the template to use the JA Opal template. Finally, I get this: http://meiliving.com/

I think that I’m missing a bunch of images and settings. I’m doing all of this using bluehost as my hosting company. I’ve been reading all the forum posts, but I feel pretty lost. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

if you install the quickstart, you should not need to change the template to opal.

quickstart = joomla + opal preinstalled on joomla

did you go through the steps to re-install joomla? were you given the option to install the sample database that comes with the Quickstart?

if the answer is no then you need to make sure you go through the re-install of joomla before you delete the installation directory

to do this you need to navigate to your installation/index.php in your browser after intsalling the quickstart files – this will take u thru the joomla install wizard let you install the quickstart sample database which will give you all the demo images etc

ps if you do this i would advise you to select the option to delete/overwrite your existing mysql database – its in the advanced settings of the install database page

jsliao, thanks! i didn’t know that quickstart = joomla + opal preinstalled on joomla. On BlueHost, there’s a simple script that installs joomla for you. So I ran that first before doing quickstart. That was what messed me up completely! Now everything works fine. Thank you!

I am trying to install on a Joomla Jumpbox, so I can test this on my local machine before installing it on a Web server. Where do I place these files, or how do I install Quickstart when using a Jumpbox?

Jumpbox comes with Joomla preinstalled. AFAIK you can not overwrite it. A better option would be to use XAMPP.

I installed ja_nickel using the quickstart package. At one point, I am prompted to enter host name (localhost)?, username, password and name of the mysql database.

The instructions at this point says “Enter the MySQL username, password and database name you wish to use with Joomla!. These must already exist for the database you are going to use.”

At which point do I complete these steps before the actual installation ?

You should have already set up a MySQL database within your server cpanel or however it is configured.
You then use that database name and password info for your quickstart installation.
