We all start somewhere with Joomla so as someone with less than a year’s experience (still fresh in my brain) can I post some pointers…..
Most Important Advice I can give you – install akeeba backup. Learn how to use it and test out doing restores. I know we all want to get to the fun part of building a site but this will save your life more than once I bet.
on to Joomla. Do some reading on Joomla. It will pay dividends. some links for you:-

http://www.freejoomlatutorials.com/how-joomla-works/what-does-the-template-do
http://docs.joomla.org/Start_hereAll JA templates come with a tutorial – mendozite is here – that contain all the settings to get it to look like the demo.
All JA templates have a module position layout for you to see – mendozite’s is here – so that you can pick which position to set your module. Finally, all templates from JA come with as a quickstart package that contains all the content and modules placed just like the demo. Far and away the best way to start – just edit the data and you are good to go!!
Hope that helps a bit for you.
