I’m trying to squeeze the size of my articles to get more on the first screen. I’d want just the words "read more" linked rather than a box taking up room. Suggestions welcome on where I reformat the read more, preferably by using custom.css.

You can remove the border from button adding this to your custom.css

.btn-default {
border:0px!important;
}
