May 9, 2011 at 9:21 am #163763Hello,
I have just downloaded and installed JA Ores Quickstart on my localhost (local PC). The process went smooth and fine. However, it is based on Joomla 1.6.1 and I would like to upgrade to the latest Joomla version – currently 1.6.3.
I consulted Joomla official doc at http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.6_from_an_existing_1.6x_version and opt to use automatic upgrade through Joomla Extension Manager. I did every step as outlined in the guideline one by one and pushed the update button but nothing happened; the page just tries to download the update package and returns with no result; neither displaying any error!
I think it might be an issue with localhost and WAPM which prevents the download.
Next, I went for the second upgrade way and manually downloaded “Joomla_1.6.1_to_1.6.3-Stable-Patch_Package” update pack from Joomla website. Now, I am in doubt whether should I unpack the update pack over my current 1.6.1 installation which will overwrite the 1.6.1 files such as JA Ores template files located in template folder?
Please kindly advise me how to proceed with the upgrade.
Thanks,
VaalfcoP.S. I found this thread of no useful tips: http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/joomla-1-6-2-released-and-how-do-i-upgrade-1-6-1-to-1-6-2/

May 9, 2011 at 9:34 am #390383Hi,
Please check my reply at http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/joomla-1-6-2-released-and-how-do-i-upgrade-1-6-1-to-1-6-2/#post-387586
Please make sure you backup your site before you upgrade. To backup your site you can use Akeeba Backup component.

May 9, 2011 at 10:28 am #390395Hi Himangi,
I tried your suggested solution from Akeeba but like many other flawed components it failed to do what is expected from them.
It says: “Could not download the Joomla! installation package. You have to update Joomla! manually.”
Do you have any idea why it cannot download the installation package? NOTE that I am running Akeeba from a local installation not a production server.
Do you have suggestion on how to manually proceed with this upgrade? Thanks,

May 9, 2011 at 10:44 am #390400Hi,
i have never come across the error you have mentioned. But if you are on local server and trying to upgrade Joomla and getting the said error then my guess is it’s because it could not connect to the internet to proceed with upgradation.. Please check if you are getting connection..
Otherwise please find upgrade package at http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/?action=FrsReleaseBrowse&frs_package_id=5881
and find upgrade instructions at http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.6_from_an_existing_1.6x_versionvaalfco Friendvaalfco

May 9, 2011 at 10:59 am #390401Himangi,
Many thanks for your prompt update.
I gave it one another try and it did upgrade my Joomla from 1.6.1 to 1.6.3.
I couldn’t figure out what was actually preventing the download but whatever been, it is not the case anymore!
Thanks,
Vaalfco -
