Can anyone explain how to upgrade to latest version of JA Comment? In the instructions it says that the simplest way is to use JA Extension Manager, which a) I have not been able to get working properly and b) am bothered by the numerous warnings and cautions regarding using it. I don’t want to use the ext manager, yet the only instructions under upgrade info in the JA comment instructions is to use Ext manager. Can anyone explain an alternative method?

You could TRY to overwrite your current JA Comment component/module/plugin files with the new files
    – but no guarantee that this will work. (ALWAYS make sure to back up your site and database(s) first)

I suppose you could always uninstall your current version of JA Comment and then install the updated version.

Otherwise, using the Extension Manager is how such updates are usually enacted.
