January 25, 2010 at 1:59 pm #330331Well I’m actually dumbfounded.
How dare JoomlArt call this an Enterprise Component. You spent two years developing this component
You then sell it to customers and spend another 8 months “fixing it” with the help of these paying customers though bug-testing (which you clearly did not do)
We (the paying customers) then have to suffer through the horrible procedures for keeping it up to date
We now have a non-production system which you call an Enterprise Class Product that is still bug-riddenHaving bought it right-away, I gave it a few months, hoping you’d sort it out. I’ve wasted more than have my support term on this product. When 12 months passes, what then
Get the upgrade methods in order. Stop adding features which only result in more. Get the basics right first, quickly, you’re wasting my money>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(

January 25, 2010 at 8:29 pm #330350Hi dailyweb365
I can understand your frustration when facing the upgrade problem. However as standard upgrade of any Joomla component, the only way to upgrade for any Joomla component is uninstall old version and then install the new version.
The uninstall won’t delete your database so any configuration you made will be restored. However, any file/folder changes will be LOST with the uninstaller procedure. A full back up is always recommended
If you haven’t been familiar with Joomla component upgrade, please search around and information like this can be very useful.
We always want to provide the best solution for usage/upgrade, however, please note that there are limitations/barrier.
For your information, the auto updater service is one of our 10 important list for all JA products in 2010, however you have to wait for sometimes before we can put that service into life.

January 25, 2010 at 9:31 pm #330354Hi Hung
Let me correct you on your statements as you are hugely mistaken.Firstly, not even upgrading Joomla itself requires an uninstall. You simply copy the new installation over the existing one, thats it
Secondly, although some joomla components require uninstall, we’re talking about a so called Enterprise Component, so lets look at some Enterprise/Complex systems shall we.
Theres JReviews (does not need an uninstall), neither does VirtueMart, neither does Jomsocial. These are highlu complex systemsShould you wish your component to live up to its name as an Enterprise solution, learn from the ones I’ve mentioned. Did I forget to mention that they’re ALL cheaper than Jobboard also….
Another thing Hung, I was not complaining about modifications that needed to be redone, but I the configurations thereof.
I’m am very familiar with Joomla and also an experienced computer systems engineer, so yes, I know a bit about this stuff……. and don’t need to read up on the rudimentary issues
My complaint still holds. Ensure that your system delivers Enterprise Stability,Maintenance and features. I would have paid $1000 for Jobboard, just as long as it works 99%
Thanks:p

Hi dailyweb365,
Please understand that the uninstall & install process do a simple job by removing old files + replace with new files. You can either copy + overwrite the new files via FPT then do necessary sql update (if required)As I said, all of your configurations are preserved during uninstall/re-install process. I don’t see any difference between uninstall/re-install and copy/overwrite with new files.
Let’s make the comparison:
++++++++++++++++++++++
For copy/overwrite:– You won’t be able to delete unnecessary files which are not used in new version
– You may keep your modified files? Yes, but to keep those files, developers must have separate package for new install + a patch for upgrade (eg: patch 1.0 to 1.3, patch 1.1 to 1.3, patch 1.0 to 1.1) <– I am afraid this will become more complicated for users. And if there is only one package, when you copy new files to server, everything will be overwriten, and this process will be the same as uninstall/re-installed.
– Database update must be done independently and not many users are experienced with. For install/uninstall process:
– Temp files/unwanted files can be removed
– Database change/update can be done easily with this process. You don’t have to do it manually
– It support better for consequent update. Eg: if you are running 1.0 then the component can upgrade right from 1.0 to 1.1, 1.2….1.5 so it is better upgrade process for all other users.Anyway, all of these upgrade process will be the past, we are working hard on new upgrade system and roll out for JA users.
