Dear All–
After an old content item has scrolled off the bottom of the Latest News window on the frontpage, the article effectively ‘disappears’ from the website. (Of course, it’s still there in the back end)
Can anyone help me to create a mainmenu button labelled ‘News archive’ which lets user see a list of all the old news articles? Or lets the user open a content item from a list of whatever is in the archive?
Thank you for your help in advance and
Season’s Greetings!
Phil

December 20, 2006 at 7:18 pm #212669What you could do is enable the archive and that will put a new section in displaying a link to the archives. In order to do this you will have to archive the old items. Here is a quick overview of how to get it all going:
First you have to publish the Archive module. Module Menu – Site Modules click on publish. Open up the Archive Module and tweak the settings if you like. The default settings should be fine for a quick demonstration of the archive.
Now you have to archive your content items. This can be automated but we will get to that in a moment. Go to Content – Content By Section – News – News Items. Find an old item that you want to archive and select it then hit the archive button at the top of the page. Refresh the front end of your site and your new archive menu should display a link to the month that that item was published. Click the link and it will take you to a list of archived items for that month.
Now the trouble here is you have to archive everything manually and that could be a lot of work if you have lots of items. So how do we automate this? First, start using the Finished Publishing field on the item page (publishing tab) and enter dates for items to expire. They will not be deleted but will no longer display on the site.
Next pick up the AutoArchive Bot extension that will automatically archive the items that have finished publishing. This extension will auto archive using a variety of other criteria too. Check it out here:

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply. Great advice- this works just fine at http://www.nrc1913.org
Would be nice to tidy up the selection of articles from which to choose, once the month has been clicked- the images seem to get in the way a bit, but hey….
Many thanks
