Just a question … Are there any particular reasons you would not want to utilize the quickstart installation process?

I wish I could make it work. I don’t know what all the different modules are and what they do, whether it has video inside your templates and so on. There seem to be no instructions anywhere that are clear. All I found so far is what you have written in the forum.
I see the thing about backups and restoring my privious files over the Quickstart installation and I don’t know what files to restore.
I tried to put the Quickstart in the main directory and it came up with the projected installation package screen, but I still don’t know what Installation folder I’m supposed to delete. When I deleted the installation folder in the main folder it refused to finish the installation.
I already have a database selected and established and don’t want to start a new one, so that confused the instructions even more. I have been doing these things for a long time and I seem to be very confused about what is happening with Quickstart. All the other templates install with Joomla tools. You seem to disregard Joomla installation procedures. I have no trouble with the templates that use the Joomla installation tools.
Do I need to have a blank folders for Quickstart installation ? Is it taking the place of the normal Joomla 1.7 installation? I thought this would all be automatic with the Joomla installation tools, but it seems to be very complicated.
Please tell me what to do, especially with using the same database I installed Joomla in Godaddy hosting. And please tell me what the functions are for each Joomlart Quickstart design. What is different than having a simple template? Can I modify the template?:((

    Richynyc,

I hope my advice will help you. It relates specifically to the removal of the installation directory, and assumes you have successfully “installed quick start” to this point.

Once the message “remember to remove installation directory completely” comes up, do this:

In a separate browser window, WITHOUT closing the “installation” current browser window, open your web host File Manager, (accessible via the cPanel of your website).

Locate the public_html directory, and inside that public_html directory, locate a directory called “installation”.

Next, EITHER change the name of the installation directory to _installation (without removing the directory, if you are nervous about “deleting”), OR using the “delete” button of the file manager, delete the “installation” directory. Either of the two options will render the “installation” directory useless, which is what you want.

When you have done that (either changed the name or deleted the directory) close the file manager, and go back to the other browser window you left open (the one with the quickstart installation message), and proceed with the task at hand.
From memory, I think your options are either “visit admin” or “view site”. If you have any Qs, pls post them here. If you can do a screensharing, I can walk you through it.

You don’t need a blank folder for quick start installation. It is called “quickstart” because it instals Joomla, the extensions, the modules and the whole “deal” the way you see it on Joomlart’s demo, into the directory on your web server in which you want the finished site to live. You would NOT use quick start if you have a functioning Joomla site, and all you want to do is add a template or extension. Essentially, quickstart is for the user who sees the demo on joomlart, and wants to instal Joomla and the template to look just like the demo, on his/her domain.

You might want to make a “trial” folder within the public_html folder of your site, and run a test of quickstart in there. This prevents disruption of your website, if you have a live site on the domain you are working on. What this means is, if mydomain(dot)com has a website running on it, then mydomain(dot)com/trial can house a development/testing/learning joomla instal and website. The url would be mydomain(dot)com/trial/administrator for the login.

Yes you CAN develop in “trial” directory, then move entire site to “public_html” directory when complete. Get yourself a copy of akeeba backup, the developer (nick dionysopoulos) is a genius – and has the BEST instructional videos on his site. (Google it).

I don’t suspect this next paragraph to be the problem in your case, so don’t panic…

MOST installation and functional problems in Joomla instals, stem from file permission problems on the web server. If it’s ain’t broke- don’t fix it. If you got to the point you got to, (deleting “installation” directory) then it appears you have no permissions problems.

Regarding the functions of each Joomla Quickstart Design, each template “quickstart” has all the functions as seen in the joomlart demo. As joomlart develops more features (slideshows, modules (like twitter, Facebook), tabs, search box, etc etc, these get added to new quickstarts. You can download an extension from the template download panel, and instal it on your functioning Joomla site, such is the beauty of this system.

If you have a fully operational Joomla site, you can instal JUST the template (without the quickstart), then select your new template in the “template manager” and suddenly all your existing website content displays with a new look. Saves the effort of a total rebuild.

Templates can generally be modified using template manager in the backend, with more coding knowledge you could really modify the html and CSS of the template, the possibilities are endless. It is an awesome system once you get your head around it. The major disadvantage is that there are no “bouncing ball” instructions around, written in plain, simple English. You will “generally” find people on most forums willing to help. Remember though, most folk have limited time, and writing detailed replies isn’t always an option for them, so you might not always get the answers you want as thoroughly and as quickly as you want them.

Consider joining ostraining.com they provide same day answers to your Joomla questions, from experts, who not only know the tech stuff, but have the ability to explain and teach. It costs money- but you need to ask “what is my time and frustration worth” when deciding whether or not to join. Also, lynda.com is a great resource.

    Dear daBro,
I figured it installed Joomla as it asked for the database. In Godaddy theintial installation does that.
So the question then becomes, what files need to be installed where to use the template or any otherplug-ins Joomlart provides in the installation?
What are all the files not zipped into the Quickstart.zip file?
    Thanks, Richard

I have NO IDEA why GoDaddy does things the way they do … makes it very difficult for no good reason.

In any case, the information you need from GoDaddy in order to complete your quickstart installation is the following:

    Database Host:
    Database Username:
    Database Password:
    Database Name:

With this information, you can successfully complete the installation – especially if you follow the steps within our QUICKSTART TUTORIAL[/url]

    Hey Mate

Everything you need is zipped into the QS, and it automatically puts every extension, module, file and document where it needs to go, hence the name “quickstart”. My previous post should get you through it all, no probs. Just keep trying, until it works, you can always delete a dud installation and start again- a complete quick instal should take less than 10 mins, and that’s going slow.

Give it a try, let me know how you end up. I am busy today, but will look back when I get a chance. In paid resources (training) online, there are outstanding tutorial videos. The cost is negligible.

    Cheers

Are you referring to “paid resources (training)” via GoDaddy ??

ostraining.com and lynda.com both have outstanding resources, the cost is pittance for what you actually get. OStraining has one-on-one answers to your questions via a forum, answers come from trainers; lynda.com has a sensational video library, complete with excercise files which can be downloaded.

Ahhh, I guess I need to read things more closely. :-[

I COULDN”T AGREE WITH YOU MORE about BOTH LYNDA.COM and OSTRAINING.COM

I, myself, have used Lynda.com’s training videos to help myself learn a number of applications
    – from Dreamweaver, to CSS, to Joomla, to MS Excel, etc.

For those of us who learn better via visual example, these resources are invaluable and well worth the relatively nominal price.
