I can’t change my attrib 777 while i try to change my files. I always get the answer:

550 Could not change perms on /templates/ja_teline_iii/layouts/blocks/header.php: Operation not permitted

    Dear skiforbund,

Thats a server Directory Permission and Ownership problem. How do you relate that to Teline III problem?

However, if you are comfortable, you can PM me your Hosting login and FTP details, I shall try to help you out.

    Marking it as Non-JA Question.

It may be your host does not permit 777 permissions in the server config, its the most insecure setting.

It may also be dependent how you uploaded, if you used ftp with account details then youd probably own the files, however if you uploaded the zip and used a file manager in your cp the files may have been written as nobody which is host system permissions in which case your account level clearance does not permit you to modify them.

Another way this can happen is if a php script runs as nobody instead of your account ownership and creates any directories or files these can also be written as nobody.

You need to contact your hosting provider and ask them to sort it out, or, alternatively if you have control access to the server such as if you are the primary customer then you need to go in via terminal session or similar and change the ownership permissions ( chown command) – however, if this is the case you must be very sure of what you are doing, mistakes in the sytem files can be very hazarous to the health of your server, if you are not 100% certain what to do still seek the assistance of your hosting provider.

There are other ways this situation can arise but what I have listed are some common reason for the occurence.

Webservers are complex things, there are many varying ways they can be configured to operate and how they function depending on the security settings for apache and php etc. these things also vary depending if theyre windows, linux, bsd etc etc – that is why you will need to get your hosting provider to clarify I’m afraid.

If your host is a decent one they shouldnt have any trouble sorting this out, it just depends how they like to run things and what security schemes they like to adhere to.

    Thanks ergohost,

for the explanation, you hit the bull’s eye. 100 credits on your way.

I have ran ubuntu server running 3 joomla sites and intranet. I have struggled with the permission and folder / files ownership problems.

Forgot to say, Joomla addons can be a pain in the a**e sometimes, you get the odd script that annoys the hell out of you, some function properly with account permissions, the occasional one causes hassle if it cant use system permissions for some files and folders.

Also if you have the ftp system layer turned on or off in Joomla can sometimes affect some scripts functionality and how the permissions are set when the scripts run and read / write to the filesystem.

Cool, thanks very much darvindc, just trying to help 🙂
