What is the proper method to set up the area where the frontpage news goes to only have one article displayed?

I want to eliminate the rotating of articles and multiple articles.

select 1 for number of articles and set the roll radio button to off?

How would I eliminate JAnews frontpage and be able to diplay only one article as a frontpage item to display with readmore and thumbnail image?
