Hi guys,

Does JA Lens work OK in IE8?

We’ve been informed that the menu runs vertically down the right-hand side, rather than horizontally across the top, which it should.

I don’t have IE8 here so downloaded a multiple-IE-versions tester and was able to successfully replicate the issue, although in IE7 rather than 8.

    Can anyone help? 🙂

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

I can confirm that JA Lens (and JA Wall) do not work in IE8 or IE7. Only IE9+.

I think that the best thing to do is have your website automatically detect the version. If it is IE8 or lower, then a popup message should be activated that would inform the user that he/she is using a legacy browser and should upgrade…

Does anyone know where we can get a plugin that does this?

    Hi Rene,

Thanks for your response. Two points…

    JA Lens

The product page says “Cross Browser Support: IE7+, Firefox 2+, Safari 3+, Chrome 8+, Opera 9+ and other Standards-Supporting Browsers.” – so Joomlart clearly state IE compatibility of v7 and above.

    Plugin

Good point. I can’t seem to find one but if anyone knows of such a plugin – ie for browser / useragent X, render template Y – then that would be great. Jtouch has a plugin which does something similar.

    Thanks again for your help,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

I also check compatibility for any templates that I want to use. I recall that JA Lens did say it was compatible with IE (except IE6), otherwise I would not have chosen to use it (even though it is so good looking).

I never bothered to check until you posted your comment. I understand that Joomlart will no longer be providing support for IE7. Even still, what about IE8? It would be nice if one of the developers were to comment.

The Ja lens should be working well under the IE8, Let me know exactly what’s your problem 🙂

    Hi Sherlock,

Attached is an image showing the main problem. There are other problems but not as serious. I am quite surprised that this issue is not more serious in this forum. According to worldwide Statistics IE7 accounts for 5% of the world’s browser’s. IE8 accounts for 11% of the world’s browser’s. That totals to 16% of the world’s browser’s that cannot access a website using JA Lens. This problem needs to be addressed immediately.

Also, your product page states clearly that JA Lens works with IE7+. Unfortunately it now only works with IE9+.

It is a great looking template but the CSS for IE7/8 needs to be revised. Please get your developers to fix this problem.

    Sincerely,

    Rene

I have checked a demo of this template under IE8 and did not see the mentioned problem, Regarding the IE7 browser I have confirmed from the developer that this template does not support IE7.

It probably is mistake and that product page would need to be updated.

    Hi Sherlock,

Thanks for your reply. I created a thread on the JA Wall forum about this issue as JA Wall has the exact issue as JA Lens. Here is what we found out. JA Lens will only work with IE8 in standards mode. It will not work with IE8 in compatibility mode. When IE8 first came out a lot of people could not access websites that were created for IE7, so they set the browser to work in IE7 compatibility mode. If for some reason they do not change the setting then they will not be able to access a website created in JA Lens.

How many people does this represent? Your guess is as good as mine…

As for the mistake on the product page and the documentation. The mistake was there for months. I always check that the template is compatible with at least IE7+. I am sure many other people checked this as well.

    See attached image.

Yeah, probably those only support IE8 standards mode but the developers have determined this since the beginning of project so they would not change it now, I hope you understand.

I have not know about this until reading your report here, now you can check again, the product page info has been updated.

    Hi Guys,

Browser compatibility suggestions on the product page are outdated and i have already asked the design team to confirm the compatibility versions for the latest and older templates, i would be updating the same across all the product info pages. However, IE7 support is gone. http://www.joomlart.com/blog/news-updates/joomlart-to-stops-ie7-support-wef-from-1st-august-2012

Its a huge task to update templates for each and every version of IE especially. It would be simpler task if the templates were simple, but when you add more features backward compatibility of older browser becomes a major issue.

    Thanks Sherlock and drarvindc,

Hopefully most people using outdated browsers will upgrade soon. For now I will use a free joomla plugin that will prompt people to upgrade their browser if they are using IE7.

    Rene

Here is the plugin (compliments of swissa):

There is a great plugin so that you can inform people that the site won’t work with their shite browser – or words to that effect – that you can configure to your own needs – http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/browsers-a-web-standards/20111
