Thanks for taking the time to let us know how this worked out. Did you only add the fix to one file or did you have to add it to multiple files? I am curious about modules. Some of them are quite complicated and I was wondering about whether or not the simple fix to the index file would fix the entire site.

Now for one of those dumb questions of mine… did you put this in the index.php? OK I admit, that was one for the dumb question of the year awards… but I figure it’s better to ask the really dumb question rather than spend days trying to figure something out because I didn’t ask. I am still learning my way around the Joomla files and isn’t there an HTML file also? I think? Sheesh! Besides, there may be others out there just dying to ask but too afraid of looking dumb. At 51, I long ago quit worrying about looking dumb. 😀

    Thanks!

I put it directly after the <head> tag. I had errors on every single page and putting the code in the index.php fixed the entire site.

    Hope this helps,

I have one other question…. when you put this <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″/> onto a website does this only affect people using IE8? I am probably overthinking this but if it says EmulateIE7 I hope it doesn’t render problems for someone still using IE6. As far as I am understanding so far, this is just a command for IE8 users? I was also wondering if it affects other browsers like Firefox etc. Like I said, I am probably just overthinking this.

Very good question and fortunately for me I have IE6 on my old computer. The only thing that is not working in IE6 is the new .png’s I just added. Other than that, everything else looks fine. 🙂

I don’t know, but you can fix this issue with some “nice” extra work. When you mean that since inserting the meta tag the PNG issue with IE6 comes up and the plugins or codes in the template to render transparent PNGs correctly in IE6 do not work anymore?

First, anyone who tried the IE6 Warners or script that redirect users to a site reminding them of downloading a new browser, SOME OF THOSE DETECT IE8 as IE6 or below and open the warning or redirect IE8 users to the site telling them their brand new browser IE8 IS OUTDATED!

Second, good for people who have one or few sites only, for people with more site a bit more work:

Keep your sites as they are. Make a copy and move the site with Joomlapack to a subdomain or other directory. When you can, only duplicate the site and keep ONE MYSQL Database. This works very fine and now you have 2 sites where you have one DB. This means whenever you update your site both sites get updated BUT you can insert the meta tag for IE8 into the one original you have only for IE8, IE7, FF users etc.. Now find an appropriate IE6 detection script that really only detects old IEs correctly, find it via Google and add this one to your original site. Now whenever a user gets to the site and IE6 is detected they get forwarded on the IE6 compatible site where the new meta tag is not present and the PNGs should be displayed correctly. All other users will visit the IE8 site with the meta tag in and all users should always see a correctly working site.

Quite heavy for a workaround indeed, so maybe JA can fix this issue with adding right codes, when not….so in the end-effect people will not come around doing all the fixing for IE8 issues manually, as I already saw a site in the contest here using the meta tag or the plugin for IE8 and now the site does still not render correctly to a 100%.

I don’t know about what rampage in the entire forum you talk about, but from what I read all the time from developers here, they say they are pros, so should know what is good for their sites. Sorry to be direct, but I only judge people from how they act in the forum here.:) But who I am to judge anyone, right…..

I’m also sorry to be “direct” as you put it, but I really don’t have time to try and decipher half of what you write. I’m sure you are a very nice person, but most of the time I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. I have a hard enough time understanding well written English grammar, but mix it in with foreign verbiage and you’ve totally lost me.

I will work on the MPS forum site when I get time. I don’t intend on leaving the IE8 temporary fix the way it is. But for now, given the fact that several hundred members frequent this site, the temporary fix will have to remain until I can figure out how to fix it!

On my website http://www.filmzone.be I disabled the font-size in JA Rutile and the menu doesn’t give me problems in IE8, the only annoying problem is the with the user1-2-5-6 modules in the bottom, where they only take up a small amount of space, instead of using the whole width and dividing it according to the number of modules used.

Same thing happens with the wrapper, it seems like there is an invisible right column when you use full width.

Just added <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″/> just before the <head>-tag and whatayaknow….. my website back like before.

I’m just not happy with this solution. There should be a better fix for this… Adding an emulatorrule to the index, just postpones the problem. I’m no programmer of any kind, so I can only hope that JA brings us a fix for all of the templates….
