It would helpful to me, perhaps to others, to have a summary of how the images folder should be organized and what permissions are *generally* required for folders vs. files, and what permissions are *specifically* required for folders vs. files for some of the extensions.
1. PERMISSIONS:
Folders: My understanding is that in a Joomla 1.6 site, we generally would want the images folder itself and all of the folders in it to have permissions of 755.
Files: Again, my understanding is that files within these folders would generally have permissions set to 644.
Are these basic assumptions correct?
Now, what about more specific settings? Do some of the extensions require a change to either folders or files or both? I notice some advice, e.g., regarding setup for JA Flowlist, that suggests I need to change permissions to 777 (I’m not sure if that means for the folders only or also for the files in the folder).
This makes me wonder if my initial, general assumptions are correct.
2. ORGANIZATION: I’ve been confused by where files (.jpg, .pdf, etc.) should be stored in the images folder. I see subfolders for banners, resized, and stories. Should I create additional folders just under the images folder (e.g., if I want to store PDFs, images/pdf) or, should folders I create for organizing my images always be placed under stories (images/stories/pdf)?
Thank you for taking the time to explain this.
Kevin

</blockquote>Yes, those basic assumptions are correct… If you have got advice to change folder permission to 777, that means you need to make that folder rewritable, but as far as I know, 777 is not good for some security reasons… so just change it to 755 and don’t need to care about files permission.

</blockquote>That’s fine, place to store images is not important, you can save them everywhere you want but you should remember the path of folders you’ve created…then when you need to insert an image into an article, the site will ask you where to locate the image and then just try to remember the path to input…
I hope that is clear enough 🙂

On the images folder organization: Is it true that some of the ja modules will require me to place images in the images/stories/ folder?

No, as I said, you can define it yourself, every JA module has a configuration parameter to input image path that point to the folder you store your images.

April 14, 2011 at 2:39 pm #386376Thank you Don – very helpful. I guess I’m just seeing examples others are using in the forums, but the folder are flexible.
Again, thank you.
