The translation works fine ( Thanks) . It is possible to update articles from the admin side. However, this is not possible from the user side.
See exempleThe error message is “warning : Field required: Category
The input in the category field is not activated, so we can’t change it.
This example was made with standard installation of Joomla with examples in English been translated in French

This seem to be an issue of Joomla as Joomla does not allow user to change Category when editing article on front-end. But Category field is marked as required field, so if article was created in Uncategorised category in back-end, then it can not edited on front-end as error that you faced.
Please raise this issue on Joomla forum, I think that you can get answer to resolve this issue.
