I followed your instructions. I use nex in 1.5 joomla The line in 1.5 is around 750. I added the the height 120 part and it is now:

/* HEADER
——————————————————— */
#ja-header { background: #c33; height: 120px; }

#ja-header .main { background: url(../images/map-bg.png) no-repeat left bottom; padding: 8px 0 15px 0; }

It did increase the height of the header but also pushed the background images up.

I changed the background image for an image size 960/ 120 to have it over the full length, but now I have the height of the header right, but the image up? Any suggestions how to solve this?
