Hi spectator,
This error means you did not enter the unique FTP username (usually email address) and password exclusive for Joomla — for security reasons, this must not your main email address or username used for your FTP.
You can enter this via the configuration.php using FTP. You also need to activate this — place “1”.
Alternatively, you can place this via the global configuration.

September 8, 2008 at 8:48 am #269445I’m having a similar problem. Originally, I went to edit the template. At the top of the Template box was a box with the ftp login username and password – I’m sure this wasn’t here yesterday. I looked at it and thought – that’s wrong so I changed it. There begins my downfall :(( I saved and came up with a JFTP ::write: Bad Response.
I went to the global config and changed it to what I use for my ftp program to log on – WRONG – more errors.
I changed it back – WRONG – more errors (although I’m not sure about the password – I assumed it was the one I use to log in to the Administrator section )
I edited the config.php and uploaded it again – not sure where this bit is “You also need to activate this — place “1”. “now I get
* JFTP::login: Unable to login
* JFTP::write: Unable to use passive mode
* JFTP::delete: Bad response
* JFTP::write: Unable to use passive modeIn the end I changed Enable FTP to No and it all works fine, for the moment.
Any suggestions? Is it the password?
Thanks in advance

February 8, 2009 at 1:47 am #290067Although the above are old posts, however, may be useful for people, in the future.
I had exactly the same problem:* JFTP::login: Unable to login
* JFTP::write: Unable to use passive modeI changed configuration.php permissions (via ftp) to 755 and then 777 –
Result: Same error message in the ACPI disabled the “Enable FTP” – and it worked.
BUT:
My ftp username is not unique. So, during installation, although I entered the right password (for my ftp) it kept another password I have for the same username :confused: (a little bit complicated – or confusing!!!)Back to the Admin Control Panel: I entered the correct password (the one, for my ftp), enabled again the http://ftp... and that’s all!
I also changed -once again- permissions to configuration.php, now to be 644.
