    1. Made a directory in c:drive name sitename
    2. Unzipped the quickstart in the folder sitename.
    3. From browser type link: http://localhost/sitename/

you need to have apache+php+mysql to run it into localhost, basically a server on your localhost. Download Xampp or WAMP and install it. and then install joomla quickstart into it.

I use XAMPP and find it great.

I think there is an easier way if your just setting up a Joomla site. There is a component called ‘Joomla stand alone server’ or something like that. Maybe someone who has used it can give more info?

Yaa its called JSAS, haven’t used it myself, but ShannoN seems to be using it, its for $10 for a month. http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/5282/details

I have been using Xampp for over 3 years now. works great for me.

I would say use Wamp rather than Xampp if you are new to this. Xampp is a little harder to configure.

    http://www.wampserver.com/en/

Install wamp and start it. If you use the default settings you will have a folder called wamp on your c drive c:wamp

In that you will have a www directory. Create a folder in there called whatever you want your site to be called for instance Quartz. Unzip the quickstart files into that folder.

Browse to localhost (this can easilly be done by clicking the wamp icon in the windows toolbar) and click on the folder you created above (in this case I called it Quartz) and you will be presented with the standard joomla install screen ready to go. No need to first create a database, just name one on the joomla mysql page and it will get created for you.

With the standard Wamp install there is no mysql password set and the username is root. I would suggest going into phpmyadmin and setting a password to make it easier when moving your site live.
