I am trying install a community builder module to my website. I believe I need to uninstall the old module before it can be installed. Do anyone know exactly what I need to do.

    thanks

Then you can just install it, and unpublish the original log in that came with Joomla, and use the CB log in module that came with the package.
Which version of CB are you going to install?

    Hi cwalker,

Why don’t you provide a link to your website so people do not have to be guessing what is in there and not. Also, what Joomla version are you using? And, what version of CB are you installing?

Did you get any problems installing?

I got most of it installed. Now I am trying to install the extra extensions . When I try to install them it reads Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.

Did you turn on legacy mode?
And which extensions are you trying to install?

    Hi cwalker,

Based from the URL link — http://www.makeoverfitness.com — that you gave. There is already a CB login installed. Did you just install it, or is this an old one?

Unless you used legacy mode CB v1.1 does not work with Joomla 1.5x, from what I gathered. And, if legacy mode is not turned ON, as Menalto asked, you will get the error:

<em>@cwalker3200 64559 wrote:</em><blockquote>I got most of it installed. Now I am trying to install the extra extensions . When I try to install them it reads Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.</blockquote>

The trouble with legacy mode is that there are some extensions that will not work, if it is turned on.

There is now a CB1.2RC, that you can use native with Joomla 1.5x, but as the nomenclature indicates CB1.2RC, it is still in developmental stage, not yet fully bug tested, when fully tested, it will be labeled CB1.2. I am waiting for the well-tested CB1.2. With all the problems with JA Teline II, I do not want to introduce another potential source of complications.

You can download CB1.2RC, if you become a supporter or subscriber of the latest Manual ($20).

If you decide to use the CB1.2RC, you have to uninstall the components and modules that is associate with CBv1.1 — before installing CB1.2RC . Otherwise, you may get an error, if you attempt to install CB1.2RC.

I have installed CBv1.1 in my Joomla 1.0x, but I have not installed any in Joomla 1.5x yet because I am waiting for the well-tested CB1.2.

Most of the add on”s for CB should work without legacy mode but not all.

Maybe you can clarify this for me, Menalto. What is the advantage of placing the plugin, through the Community Builder, instead of via Joomla directly.

I read that CB wants (or have added Fireboard also. I install Fireboard directly through Joomla and so with my Shoutbox. It seems the registration in the CB login works also for the others.

So, I fail to see, how it is any advantage to do it through CB.

At least for the moment, I only use the Registration/Log in component of the CB. If I can find alternative to CB, I would rather just drop them — because they are so slow. It is now almost 6 months since Joomla 1.5x, but the compatible version of CB is still v1.2RC — talk about slow.

One of the reasons why I have not explored the Joomla 1.5x is because CB v1.2 is not yet available. I am not sure I want to add the possible complication of CB to the already tenuous condition of the JA Teline II environment.

You have modules/plug ins for Joomla itself, and you have CB(community builder), which is a component for Joomla. Within CB you can have many features added in your profile such as:
    Latest forum posts
    Music
    Videos
    Banners
    and so on.
All this small add on’s is plug in’s for CB and to use them you NEED to have CB installed.

Fireboard is also a component for Joomla, and if you wanna show on your user profiles which posts they have made in the forum you can install a plug in for CB that shows your forum posts from Fireboard in your profile.

I explored this in another thread Menalto. My concern is this. Joomla issues so many upgrades each year, because of security leaks.

If CB is not able to upgrade fast enough, then you have to choose between not upgrading to the latest Joomla version 1.0xx or 1.5x. This runs the risk of your site to potential attack. Not a very good proposition. On the other hand, if you disable CB in order to upgrade to the latest Joomla, the users would not like it.

I have a different instance. I helped a group create their website, and they are quite happy with it, mostly because of the ShoutBox.Then, when I showed them the JA Teline II, they like the simple design of the Teline II but they want the ShoutBox and the SlideShow features in the Gavick template. When I tried to install them, they install but there is imcompatibility with the JA Teline II — then I lost the JA News component altogether — the module is there but the entire JA News still did not appear in the Homepage.

So, while it seems unrelated, if I do a bulk installation of plugs ins coming via CB, if there is any incompatibility it would be quite to find which of the add ons coming from CB might have caused the problem.

Aside from the incompatibility issues, I am also concerned with bulk and speed. Sure it would be nice to have those features, but after installing CB and FireBoard, I noticed further slowdown in the speed of page presentation.

If I have to choose just one — between more features and speed, from my experience visiting sites, unless I reall need the information from a specific site, I generally leave a slow page.

All these issues make me pause what I really want in a page — whether a feature is really needed or just cosmetic. Craigslist has become one of the top ten most visited sites in the US because it has offered something that its loyal customers found useful and reliable — no videos, no banners or commercial vissual ads, essentially the most boring page you ever come across if you do not know what it is.

If I have to make priorities, it will be

    stability
    security
    speed
    simple design

    in that order

more features if they do not compromise speed.
